Dear Magicians,
One of the tricks I want to learn is the Biddle Trick. As someone who's not a beginner but who definitely hasn't reached the intermediate level yet, my feeling about the trick is that it *should* be mind-blowing -- but most of the videos in which people perform it are really bad. (Mind you, I've mostly seen performances on YouTube by people who are good at sleights but are not very good performers.) The one performance I've seen that I found really effective was Johnny Thompson's. I was smiling the whole time I watched it. So, I'm wondering if people could direct me to favorite performances of this trick. There are zillions of variations and handlings in print, one of my favorites being Giobbi's Invisible Card in Card College, but it isn't the mechanics that interest me at the moment; it's the question of how one makes a trick engaging, mysterious, moving, exciting... I have an inchoate idea of turning the trick into a faux Sherlock Holmes story. The five cards are suspects who are being held in custody. The real perpetrator (the spectator's selection) is found to have escaped from prison, and Holmes and Watson are brought in to find him... Thanks so much for any ideas people can offer on good performances of the Biddle Trick, and on the more general issues that I brought up. Best Regards, Bob |

Hi Bob,
Check John Luka's take, both on his book and dvd. I think it can also match your patter/story-lines. Good luck. |

Wingchun, jacrhis, Warren, and Magic-Daniel,
Thanks for these suggestions. I'm busy following up on them. Magic-Daniel, I'm having trouble finding Vincent's video. I googled "Michael Vincent biddle trick and had not luck. Do you have a link or different set of search terms I could try? Maybe he has a different name for his handling? |

P. S. I did come across a video of Vincent performing his version of card to pocket. Wow! What a master. Not only was the magic effective, but the presentation was really fun.

John Carey has some great work on this trick.

Thanks, MM. Do you know whether Carey describes his work anywhere besides on Spotlight on Carey? That disk seems to have disappeared into a black hole! Doesn't seem to be available anywhere, including from Mr. Carey himself.

Pretty sure it is in some lecture notes. I bought it direct from John years ago, sure he'd have the files if you contacted him. Think he called the trick Biddle With A Breather.

Okay, thanks. I'd think he'd have mentioned the lecture notes when I contacted him about Spotlight on Carey, because I mentioned my particular interest in Mr. Biddle Takes a Breather.

Bob G check out Jon Armstrong - Too Lazy to Write up Notes dvd and Paul Cummins - Fasdiu. I'm working on a version with things from them. Great stuff.
My version of Eddie fetcher "Be Honest What's it?" it's available at Penguin Magic

Ok, I have it wrong. The lecture notes are called Further Spotlight, and while it does contain a number of other breather related items it doesn't have a write up for the biddle handling. Sorry for misleading you.

Not a problem, thanks for the correction.

Thanks, helder. I've seen Armstrong's performance -- brilliant but probably not adaptable to my style. I'll look at Cummins again -- I've got his Fasidiu notes. Sometimes hard for me to tell how effective a a performance will be from a written description, so I need to give this another chance!

Thanks, Shaun. I looked on the web and found John Guastafero's "Biddleless," which is an interesting take on the biddle trick, but I wasn't able to locate Jay's version. Do you happen to have a reference to a source for it?

Adding to your story, try it this way--Instead of putting the packets together after the Biddle count, put one next to the other.Cause the card to vanish from the 5(!) cards, and go into a triumph, cause you are already set for a tenkai optical revole.
Story--the suspect got lost in the crowd... |
