Recently I am starting a personal project of creating an ultimate deck for magicians.
Though I can't disclose much for now, I would like to have your input to make the deck ultimate in real sense. So, my question is: What is your most-wanted feature in a deck? Let's see if our dream can come true. Alex Hui Hong Kong

Make them look and feel like Circle Back Tally-Ho's

I would need to say they need to be smooth, able to faro easily, and look good.

For me: Handle-ability is number one, but looks are important... not too complicated (eg skulls, multiple colors for both face and back are no-nos), but not too plain like Walgreens backs. For quite a few of my decks, I add one odd-backer and less frequently, one duplicate. I like the backs of Bikes, as they are easily marked (for magic only, folks!). That said, personal preferences are going to vary widely. There's not going to be an "ultimate" for all magicians. Lynn

My ideal deck would faro easily from top to bottom.
the back design should not be something that distracts from the magic I'm performing. this same criteria stands also for the front side. of course they should handle smooth and nice in the hands. my prefered deck at the moment is the "Phoenix Deck", but I don't like the big pips on the aces. |

I'd want the faces very standard and the backs fairly simple - or at least traditional looking. I love Aviator backs, for example - but don't like the plastic feel they now have. Two matching Jokers would be nice too.
Supposing they were normal Bicycle type quality - I'd like them marked and affordable. I'd kind of like to see the cards packaged as three decks, actually - a blue deck, a red deck and a deck of gimmicks that really match the other two with the same finish. Some good shorts and narrows/wides, matching backs in other colours, DB's, DF's and blanks in several combinations and a couple of rough/smooth cards. A small bank of Svengali would be cool, too. Possibly a card with the case printed on one side would be good. I wouldn't want a 3 and a half of clubs or stick figures or such things. |

The ultimate would be one that behaves as paper w/ the durability of plastic, yet tearable. Oh yeah white borders with an oldschool back design.
I Faro from the bottom up but whatever. Hindsight is 20/20. Make the back markable by sharpie perfectly. As in the color and sheen match the marker's ink. |

- A normal looking back design - bicycles are perfect and does not encourage spectators to suspect they are "trick cards". Also, really fancy backs imply you are a card expert and could serve to take the magic out of their experience. Of course, being a skilled card shark is how some magi wish to be seen - perhaps fancy cards work for them.
I'd really like a back design with a subtle tiled pattern, like bees, but with a border like bikes. Something that allows me to subtlety m**k certain cards in minor ways (primarily o** w** b**ks) The faces should be standard - looking. The standard bicycle finish is great, I wouldn't want anything too dissimilar. They need to faro smoothly, preferably cut for Faros that start from the back of the cards. Any decent deck, after a bit of light break-in, will faro just fine either way in my experience. The deck should come arranged in the usual USPCC new deck order. Si Stebbins or my favorite stack would also be acceptable. The case should have no sticker seal, nothing inside on which cards could catch, and a functioning cellophane strip thingy. I suppose the main takeaway for my post is that bicycles are just about perfect - only the case and back could be improved from my point of view. Edit: as somebody else said, two identical jokers! And instead of the advertisement cards, two of the following gaffs: DB, DF, bl*nk b**k or even an odd b*** would be nice (!? Imagine opening up a new blue deck and immediately performing a stranger card routine!). |
