I made the leap to using Phoenix playing card several months ago. There are a lot of things to commend about them. However, and this might be a unique issue only to myself, but they tend to feel like they get tacky after a while. When spreading cards they might clump for lack of better word. Whether I am trying to do a two card push-off to obtain a pinky break the cards become unreliable. I sent a note to Christian over at Card Shark and he said that it's pretty much the same finish that they use for Bicycles so he is vexed as well. Just wondering if anybody else had a similar issue?

I do, but I get the same issue with Bicycles after a while as well. I just figure its time to retire that deck.

It may be the humidity. I live nearby and learned the hard way to only use plastic cards if you're away from air conditioning.

Is this a new deck? If so, that is strange except if you are in a very humid area. If it's an old deck, well, time to set it aside and use a new one for a while. If you stash the old deck in a dry place for a week or two, you'll find it drier and handling much better when you return to it.

If you use hand lotion, that could add to the clumpiness.

Ed, I know what you mean. I like and use Phoenix cards. Out of the box they handle smoothly, fan and spread nicely and are some of the most reliable cards for faro work. But they do have a short shelf life and become sticky/clumpy after some use. Standard Bicycles it seems these days are less consistent in terms of quality especially for faro work, but tend to last longer for general use. Some seem to have endless life in terms of fanning and spreading well, and even get better with age. These days I don't use a deck for too long so I prefer Phoenix, mainly because they weave so well and have great control.

Thanks for your input guys. I think you're right. Between the humidity and the fact that I often use hand creams this becomes an issue.
When I am doing restaurant work or an outside cocktail party I will stick with the bikes. They do seem to hold up longer. But for more formal/corporate events I'll utilize the Phoenix cards. Thanks all |
