Dear Magicians,
I need to learn a slip cut (retaining the top card while cutting the rest of the deck) for a trick I'm working on. Does anyone know if there's a way to do such a cut completely in the hands, without using a table at all? That's what I need for this trick. As far as I can tell, Card College has only a tabled slip cut, and I haven't found an in-the hands version on the web. I may easily have misssed a relevant thread on the Café, but so far I haven't found anything. Thanks for any help you can offer. Regards, Bob |

I suppose you are referring to a top card slip cut. Actually, Giobbi teachs in vol. 1 of Card College a " in the hand slip cut". You can also find it in Annotated Erdnase by Ortiz. You can also see it perfomed/explained in a number of videos (dvds). The one I recall of is Frank Garcia's 'Stars of Magic' dvd (at the moment I haven't handy his dvds but can easily visualize him explain in his version of Spectator cutting aces). Hopes this helps.
P.S.: if you need to learn a bottom slip cut, there's no better than Lorayne's Halo cut. |

Thanks, WingChun. I think a bottom slip cut might actually be better, because I'm not sure that a top slip cut would hide the face-up card that's second from the bottom. But I thought I'd experiment with a top slip cut because I've spent so many hours, days, and months trying to learn the Halo Cut, and it's still inconsistent.
If you have a moment to look up Giobbi's description of the slip cut, I'd be curious to hear where you found it. The cumulative index in Vol. 5 lists the slip cut just once, on p. 61 of Vol. 1. I looked there; the deck starts in the hands but ends up on the table. I'll look into the Garcia DVD. |

For sheer naturalness, it's hard to beat a cover-pass cut. It replicates perfectly how most people would perform an in-the-hands cut.
For one that's a little more mannered but still good, I recommend Ernest Earick's handling of the Endfield slip cut in By Forces Unseen. |

Hi Bob,
The ‘bottom slip cut’ is called HaLo Cut, by Harry Lorayne. For your ref. Alex Hui

Hi Alex,
Thanks. The HaLo Cut is the one that I can't seem to get. I just watched myself trying it in the mirror, and it was painfully obvious that I was sliding the bottom card over to meet the top packet. I've watched Harry on his DVD and read about the cut in two or three of his books, and the move continues to elude me. From what he ssays on his DVD, and from something that Vlad on the Café mentioned in another thread, I'm guessing that I haven't found the "sweet spot" -- the right place on my forefinger to contact the bottom card. Honestly, it's driving me nuts! I really want to learn this effect, and the slip cut is the one thing that still stands in my way. You're a violin player, I gather? Very cool. I'm taking piano lessons. Not easy, but very rewarding to play. Bob |

Nice to hear from you, Rupert. Is a cover-pass cut a kind of pass? The very word "pass" makes me tremble. If it's more cut than pass then I'd be interested to learn more about it. Can you recommend any good sources?
I did look up By Forces Unseen. Sadly, I'm going to have to pass on this one; I was getting into a very bad habit of buying lots and lots of magic books & dvd's -- not good for the wallet. So I'm "grounding" myself for the near future. But perhaps you'll happen to suggest books or videos that I already own. Bob |

Thanks, Alex. I've put a video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/XpTnUaiXv4w. It lasts about 5 miutes, and shows my attempts to do the HaLo cut and another bottom slip cut. I'd be grateful for any ideas from you or others. A couple of notes: When I first talk about the Halo cut, I say "slip" when I mean "swing" or "kick." Also, I realized afterward that part of why the second, non-Halo cut was so visible was that I had a big, unintended break opening up in *front*.

Hi, Yowie,
Welcome! Do you mean the effect that I'm trying to learn? That trick is Nick Trost's Sub-Trunk Mystery. I learned it from one of the DVD's on Trost's magic that Aldo Colombini produced after Trost's death. It's volume 2 of Aldo on Trost. It's also described in one of the Subtle card Magic of Nick Trost books, volume 3, maybe, though I haven't seen it. Out of curiousity, how does your question relate to the passage that you quoted from Rupert? Bob |

Thanks for the reference Bob - but I was referring to the Endfield Slip Cut in Earick's By Forces Unseen, which Robert had mentioned. I like the Halo cut but Mr Earick always had interesting takes on existing sleights, but I don't recall the Endfield Slip Cut from the book.
Edit: spelling |

Bobby Bernard has a slip cut in the hands, very nice. It's in one of his Videonics videos. It's available from llepub.com

Sennheiser,
Thanks - didn't know about Mr. Behr's archive. Excellent resource. |
