I would also recommend John Bannon as LarryD suggested.

Agreed again.
Bannon is a rebellious rip in the surface of magic no matter if he is offering a complex, move-laden, sleight of hand torture session, or a self-working miracle. His thinking is always fresh and out of the box. His magic has edge. And yes, self-working does not mean self-performing. If anything, these routines are less-forgiving because as performers we can concentrate entirely on performance verses being weighed down by what we may need to do behind the scenes. In essence, no excuses. Make it count.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

My top 4 favourites:
- Gemini Twins - Topsy Turvy triumph - Trick name I cant remember, by Ed Marlo. Spectator puts his card back, magician deals cards and spectator says stop, stops for example 6 of spades, magician counts 6 cards and its the spectators card. Maybe somebody knows the name. - Also another variation using the same principle, where spectator puts his card back, cuts as many times as he wish, then magician says the exact card position, for example its 10th from the top, counts 10 cards and its the spectators card. I cant remember that name either. And tricks I like: - Sal Piacante 8 packet trick - Do as I do - Out of this world - Shuffle bored John Carey has many great self working/semi self working card tricks. I highly recommend his material. |

Echo the Topsy Turvy triumph.
I am also surprised nobody pointed you to 3 amazing books, which I could not live without. It's the Roberto Giobbi's Light trilogy: Giobbi Light Giobbi Extra-Light Giobbi Super-Light Quite frankly, even when you have mastered card sleights you will be surprised to fool many pro's with one of the gems featured in these three books.

Speaking of Roberto Giobbi: apart from his "Light"-series I can highly recommend "Simply Amazing" (available at Penguin). Even though the current price tag might scare off some potential buyers, you should consider that the download contains in-depth video instructions by one of the greatest teachers in card magic!
Another great source for sleight-free card magic is "Green Lite" by Lennart Green. The effects are often based on mathematical principles, which means that some of them do require "lengthy processes". However if you can come up with interesting stories as well as the right occasions to perform these effects, that shouldn't be an issue. With "Rain Man" Green presents an alternate handling for Simon Aronson's "Shuffle-bored", that is definitely worth checking out. "Green Lite" also features one of the greatest variations on probably the most classic of all self-working card tricks: "Stolen Cards" is IMHO the best "Gemini Twins" you can do! If you're willing to get the "special" deck that can only be used for this one effect... To finally come back to the initial question, here are my top 10 self-working, sleight-free or semi-automatic magic effects (in no particular order) ;-) 1) Sal's Memory Opener (Sal Piacente) 2) Neither blind nor stupid (Juan Tamariz) 3) Lazyman's Card Trick (Harry Lorayne) 4) Self-evident (David Regal) 5) No-touch CAAN (Devin Knight) 6) Stolen Cards (Lennart Green) 7) Out of this World (Paul Curry) 8) Shuffling Lesson (Chad Long) 9) Play it Straight (Triumph) (John Bannon) 10) Prior Commitment (Simon Aronson) |

I've seen miracles performed with a Stripper Deck. It's an underrated and underused prop.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Bit older thread, but it's always fun to talk about easy but potentially hard-hitting tricks for beginners and professionals alike.
- Emotional Reaction. This is just a presentation for a basic principle, but when performed well the payoff can be huge. - Spectator Deals the Aces. I'm not sure of the original source, I learned the presentation from Mismag. I've combined this with presentation similar to C3, and the spectator accomplishes what the magician goofs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M70hhflpCbI - Mental Epic. Lots of various methods available, but all are self-working (or at least, sleight-free). - Scotch and Soda. A very versatile set, but when performed well even the basic effect can be great. - Invisible Deck. The basic effect, or even when a part of a routine, should always be able to entertain. Quote:
