I love his use of the GD. The fact that he has people studying the deck as he does the dirty work is great.

I performed the five card mind reading today at my local Café. The audience had reasonable guesses about how I knew the five cards but were baffled about the last one. The strength of this effects lies in the layers on layers of deception. There is a lot of muck thru which to walk before arriving at the destination.
Here is a 29-minute live performance of mine: https://youtu.be/lq2Rj1uf05M I used to be quite sensitive to criticism; I am much less so now; so, please do criticize my technique, presentation, and posts. It helps me to grow, and I promise to take responsibility and not to be defensive. |

I have been performing my version of this wonderful effect a lot lately. It absolutely fries people. Such great work. The "thought of" card is genius.

Love this trick. I recommend getting into the gilbreath principle as well if you like this sort of stuff.

Such a wonderful subtlety. I'm still trying to find a definitive work on the Gilbreath Principle, gilbreath76.

OP: The best source for you to read is Mnemonica by Juan Tamariz. Once you understand the basic principles in this book you will understand how David Blaine does his effect. However, the version on television has been edited and there is one crucial part cut out. Still, if you understand the principle and are willing to put in the work to be able to perform the effect, you will inherently understand how to recreate the missing step. That being said, understand that if you don't already have experience with the principles involved, there will be considerable work to be put in. Trust me, the work will be worth it!

I just came across this effect in Asi Wind's book. Funny, the "subtlety" totally flew past me when watching the Cambridge video. Once I read about it I was ready to slap myself. It's one of those things that often happens when performing tricks anyways and I can't see how any layperson, or even many magicians would catch on to it.

Frankly, I am not too impressed with this routine. The false s------, the open p--k, using only a few cards .
I would want to have the spectators shuffle the cards and choose some at random, out of sight, without me handling the deck any more. To be convincing. Fallon is acting high here. I am not implying he is on something, but to say he is favorable to anything shown to him would be an understatement. I think the princess card trick would have blown him away. or the 21 card trick on that day . hehe. |

Thanks Jonathan, I must agree, if you get those reactions that is what matters. So I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much for saying it in a kind way. Not trying to bash, then set it right.... hehe. I will have to try it out. I still will want to do it cleaner in at least one or two steps. so again, I appreciate it. Because mind reading with cards really kills if it is the right combination of things. It does not always make the most sense, just what works with laymen.

Blaine is a master of intimate impact, allowing that impact to shockwave out to others through enthusiastic reactions.
This is not to say that anything is perfect. Before dissecting a performance take the time to fully appreciate it's strengths. Often these strengths are invisible to the untrained or overly critical. Some strengths won't work for you(do to experience, character, approach etc.), doesn't invalidate them altogether or at all. |
