Mentalists in the business of making money selling variations on variations of techniques have learned to carve out a nice business from the gullible always searching for the holy grail. Virtually all magic ads overpromise and underdeliver. When you consider all the performing mentalists and what their shows consist of, you can get all those techniques for less than $100 worth of books. Unfortunately, most young mentalists learn this the hard way. If you can do a center tear, force a card, switch a billet and use a gaffed envelope, you can create an hour of mind blowing mentalism. Look at what the pros do. None of it uses this stuff. Go look at Kreskin doing the lazy man's card trick while playing the piano. He gets 7 minutes out of it and makes it a miracle. Stop buying and start reading stuff you have. It's there.

Actually the Black Flame was a free product. If you bought $59 or $69 worth of products you received it free. The same is for the new product, Colosso.

Black Flame was free if you bought other products, but only for a while. After the free offer ended, it was (and is) sold by itself as a stand alone offering for different prices, first $49, and at the time of this post, $76.

Whew!
I can't, and won't, address all the haters. But I'll share a couple of thoughts. I've been a professional performer for over 40 years! I write ad copy to stimulate the imagination, NOT to give clues to those who will never buy a trick, yet come on here and share what they think it is! Those people are ALWAYS angry that I purposely write ad copy that will NOT give enough clues to figure out! I want to recapture the feeling I had as a child when I read all the Tannen's catalogues or the Nelson catalogues. I want to NOT be able to figure it out from the ad. And reviewing my work from 15 years ago as to where I'm at today, is crazy. 15 years ago I added PUA information in many tricks that I sold to that market. Outside markets pay MUCH more than magicians. As for REAL psychics... there are several kinds. The Psychic Fair tree huggers don't use any gimmicks. My pal Herb Dewey and close friend Richard Webster did that stuff. The GYPSY market, one dangerously closed in Miami, LA and other markets, in fact, DO burn billets! Spend $20 and see it in action. The SPIRITUALIST market read folded billets, but you have to go see a seancé, not compare it with booth workers. I think here's where some of the problem arises. A reasonable guy may purchase a trick from Joe Mentalist and NOT do it the way it's taught. So this hypothetical guy only learns, say, the first half of this imaginary trick, and thinks he recognizes it as one he saw before. Then he comes on here and tells you all that Joe Mentalist's trick is nothing more than a repackaging of so-and-so's trick. Bad memories and not fully comprehending the original. No every body, but some, do that. Then some other guy who has read the ad now comments on the comparison and the snowball begins. Black Flame has to be done to the beats as directed. ALL of it must be done. And those who have it know that. Switchblade is ONLY an excellent read technique when you do the Paddle Move! That's what makes it great. The back of the billet becomes the front at the same time it's displayed and opens automatically. LOTS of papers are folded, LOL, that doesn't mean they're the same trick. Black Flame is the same. The switch is is so smooth it can't be seen, it's fast and the read is beautifully accomplished when you strike the match! Completely unseen. 20 years ago, Side Show was a fun CT that stole the Side! The ad said: No Centers! That's not misinformation, that's fun, man. BTW, the presentation of The Phantom Artist is worth 10 times the price, which was NOTHING! It was a BONUS premium for buying something else. LOL We so often forget what the audience sees and experiences. THAT'S what I want your imagination to conceive when you read ad copy. NOT how it's done and what the gimmick is. My first review of my ad copy was a brilliant review of Mephisto's Journey. The reviewer was going to tear the ad apart bit by bit. But as he learned the trick, and then actually PERFORMED IT, he learned that each bit in the ad, was not only true, but UNDERSTATED. (I forget the online magazine. Kenton wrote for it. The Invisible Eye, maybe?) Any whooooo I sell EFFECT! And baby, it's FUN to be fooled. Life is short. Bob Cassidy and I were laughing about the haters and lovers and how little this stuff matters when you're going to die. My car crash opened my eyes a bit. Haters gonna hate. I love you guys. Whether you like it or not, Peace, Docc |

Well, I don’t know about old Tannen’s catalogs. I do know that there’s open description and there’s implication and there’s deception by misleading description. I will restate that I feel there is real value in comparing the description to the actual material. I still don’t really know how to apply this, but there is a valuable lesson there.
The PUA market may pay well, but it just makes me feel slimy to read some of the stuff like “the most attractive woman there will ditch the guy she came in with and go home with you instead.” And as to whether it is fair to refer to the older material with the get-her-in-bed bits, since the same material is still being sold with the same copy, I consider it a current product. I will freely accept that psychics outside my realm of experience (store front palm and tarot, mostly) may use billets. If I get a chance to see one in action, I will be delighted to pay for a reading. All that said, I’m not a hater. I love watching Docc in the Monster Mentalism videos. I don’t use much of the material, but watching the performance is very valuable. Patrick |

And a John, I don’t think your claim is accurate. I’m not looking to get things for free. But I do want to know what I’m paying for. Money can get tight sometimes. I hate paying for something and finding it isn’t what the description made it out to be. There’s a huge difference between wanting things for free and wanting actual value for dollar.

"The switch is is so smooth it can't be seen, it's fast and the read is beautifully accomplished when you strike the match!
Completely unseen. " This is the reason why the method is so obvious that the trailer does not show an actual footage as in "switchblade". |

Woolery, it is not all about you. It is about the expectations of the current generation.

Do all people in the "current generation" share the exact same expectations on all matters, in all circumstances? Or might some people in this group have expectations that may vary a little, perhaps a lot, from others in the same group, based on their individuality and the uniqueness of the situation? What an absurd over-generalization. |

Ah yes .. apparently cross the line here with the "in crowd" and suffer the consequences. You have answered your own question.

What snake oil is being sold here as nostalgia?
The traditional magic mail-order catalog experience from the old days was too often one of massive disappointment when the trick utterly failed to live up to its tantalizing and thrilling written description in the catalog. That's not an experience to glorify. Those days are far better left behind. Mail-order dealers could get away with a lot more in the old days. It was harder to communicate with the dealer to complain, and customers could not easily communicate with each other to give warning. But that's changed now. Unhappy customers will quickly complain, and they will spread the word when the dealer is a bum. And rightly so. |

Actually, my questions were rhetorical, making a point and not requiring an answer...but I see you missed that.
