Welcome Shuca,
There are tips about psychology, timing, framing and other aspects of performance that would help a Magician as well as reviews of Magic tricks and talk about specific interests in Magic. There are rules about not divulging the secrets of tricks since this forum is mostly open to the internet. Tell us about yourself and your interest in Magic this far. -Mary Mowder |

"...hope to learn about how magic is done." Perhaps, we have a misunderstanding due to language.
The Café does not teach that which you apparently desire.

Magic. Is an art. To simply puzzle or fool somebody is not magic. Magic happens when you do it in an artful manner.
In short; it is a craft. An will leave them, or even just one person feeling like something magical happened. And wanting to believe it. Simply tricking somebody is not magical. Turning it into a craft. And mastering that craft, is when the trickster crosses over into "Magician." In this website, there is some real good guidance to that end. Seek it out. Shuca, welcome to Magic Café!

Welcome Shuca!
Enjoy the Café. There are so many knowledgeable people here if one just takes the time to read and learn. John is right. Magic is not a puzzle, and if you present your magic like a puzzle you are not a magician. If you want to take your audience to a different place. A place of wonderment where the impossible becomes possible. Where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Then the method should be secondary, and the journey primary. Give your audience the gift of escape. Of dreams come true. And you are there. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Shuca;
When some people talk about magic, they are referring to mystics and mediums and poltergeists; the supernatural. We don't do that stuff here (although there are some who pretend to do that) We focus on sleight of hand magic with cards, coins, billard balls etc. We focus on misdirection and entertainment. Some even pull bunnies out of hats or make pretty assistants appear and disappear. Most public libraries have books on magic/prestidigitation. One of the first magic tricks I learned many years ago was a mind reading trick from a book in the library. It totally blew away my mother-in-law. She kept hounding me for days to tell her how I did it. Most of the time, the beginner tricks that you learn will not get such a dramatic reaction, but as you learn how to do those tricks well, you'll get better responses. Most larger bookstores have books on magic that are in the same section as books on games like poker or chess. Also you may have a local magic club in your area, or a magic store. What kind of magic are you interested in? Cards? Mentalism? Coins? Doves? |
