I am extremely confident that this is the best Closeup Linking Ring Routine you will ever see 😉 arrogant maybe? Perhaps... however 8 years of tinkering has led me to this point and made the routine you are about to see. It is my favorite piece to perform and prolly the one effect I have put the most time into. Feedback and suggestions always welcome!

Hope you enjoy it! Thanks so much for your time!

Anyway! I think that I already DO, the best ring routine (for close up, platform, or stage)!!! (hee hee)

Of course I have the advantage of having performed it in thousands of school assemblies, colleges (and club dates, too) since 1975. (So, there)!

That is one to be proud of my friend, and there are no "suggestions" possible for such perfection.

Just exceptionally well done and performed...Loved every second of it! Smile

Keep up the great work, ob...You killin' it, man! Smile

That was impressive.

I liked that you mixed linking rings with finger rings, and other objects; and seem to use multiple methods (you kept me guessing).

I am curious, would you use all those phases in a restaurant setting?

You guys are all too kind! Smile thanks so much for the kind words!

Especially you Dick Smile haha I’m sorry I forgot the “‘“ haha

John - No this is my “long performance” for my Closeup act and what I am currently using in competition. My strolling routine is very short. It is more along these lnes here:

https://youtu.be/qbLy60caFGc

Haha you can skip the spongeball stuff. But my tablehopping routine is actually what you see in the video more or less (sppngeballs, Rings, then end with some card stuff)

Good morning! (it's 0545 here!)

Sorry, but, this "infernal electrisch peckenclacker" still wont let me see your ring work! (I hate machines that are smartaer than I am!

Glad my teasing didn't upset you.

I had played with a few rings, but never cared to do them, I was occupying the Charlie Miller Suite at Magic Inc, sometime in a summer of the early '70s, when Jay was showing me some props he had just acquired at an estate sale, One prop was a set if 10" Merv Taylor stainless steel rings. They "felt good" in my hands! I asked, "Ya gonna sell 'em?" He said, "Yup. I made my five rings years ago, and so I don't need these." "How much?" "Forty bucks." I bought 'em. That fall, on the road, I spent a couple weeks "playing" with them. I decided that a 5 ring routine would fit "me". A couple more weeks of practice and, I had something to try for the high school show. About a week later, I had an extra good high school group, and, I did the routine for them. WoW! it really played very well!

For the next several months, I used them for the high schools. I made a few "adjustments", and they played even better. The next August, my friend, Karrell Fox, did his "new" 3 ring routine, at Abbott's. I liked it. He said, "Feel free to use it, we don't conflict." Three 8" rings were much lighter than 5 10" rings! Karrell's routine needed a lking ky. I found one. I sold the Merv Taylors, and have done the 3 ring routine, since. When Karrell died, I inherited his two Mardo/Sterling Egg Bags, his INERTIA props, and his rings. Now I had a spare set of rings! My 3 rings, after about 40 years, know the routine, better than I.

I like to see a good ring routine! I hope I can get to see yours!

Love to see Dick's perspective wherever it shines because it always speaks as to where we're at to back to where we come from in the art. I'm sure this artful dodger Smile is as impressed as we all are with your performance, presence and obviously great respect for the art by the evidence of what you have shown here. Smile

ob, I too enjoyed the many different ways you went in this routine, from the small to include almost everything ring-like. Who were your inspirations, which creator did you find to just be ingenious? I remember admiring the work of Chris Capehart in this area of magical effect.

I really liked the larger (but not too big) ring work, and how you introduced the smaller finger rings into the dynamic. And you keep those specs involved, with repeated gags, hard right turns (like the bottle of soda pop from your hat, ala David Stone)), and just good magic thru & thru. Smile It kept building, like a good routine should. Eventually, you built the tension to the impossible with the metal ball on the ring...This is strong magic!

You have become a very good worker my friend, as good as anyone and much better than most, IMHO. Proud of your great progress and always cheering for you. Smile And y'know, I remember saying the same sorta things here about a young, up & coming, Eric Jones many, many moons ago...Hmmmmmm. 🤔

Dick - Maybe try this link instead? Http://www.obrienmagic.com/videos it may allow you to see it there. If not I’ll be happy to email you the file. I sent a Pm so you can reach out that way! Thanks so much for the kind words and the inspirational story! I hope that 40’years from now I have the same love and passion for the rings as I do today haha

Mb - Dude that is such a kind thing to say! I hope that my magic is able to make as many people happy as it did all of you in this post so far! As for inspirations, the routine that actually got me into magic was ninja rings. I fell in love with it. I was able to session with both shoot and masahiro yanagida andnhave learned a ton from them. As for the inclusion of other objects, this is all inspired by Matthew Garrett. He has actually become a great friend of mine and actually a business partner lol. We have two major projects coming out next month! Both of which featured in this video. I am just so excited that people love this because it really has been 8 years of my life leading up to it.

I plan fo have a full 20 minute cideonof my act so you guys can see how this piece fits in. There is even more going on around this routine that kinda ties everything together haha.

Simplymagic- thank you my friend!

Yes, "incredible" on many levels -- an actual routine instead of a glob of disjointed gotcha.

What will be the story told grandchildren? Told many times is the prediction.

So many ideas to "borrow" -- where to start?

Thanks so much guys! I am actually already reworking the steel ball production as it doesn’t have much motivation other than “we are going to link an object that is solid.”

It’s cliche but I was thinking about goijgbthe old “this was my grandfathers favorite piece of magic” route with the rings. Not making a huge deal if I, but just mentioning that at the beginning. He was a retired airline mechanic but had a love for pinball. On his spare time he would refurb old pinball machines. When he passed we had to get rid of all his stuff since there wasn’t any room for it, but I did keep this pinball as a special reminder of him. I already did something magical with my most magical object (my wedding ring) now I want to show you something with my grandfathers most magical object. And this is my tribute to him” or something like that... haha still working it out. Not sure if it is an eye roller or a touching story yet. I have not decided haha. Either way it is going to be subtle and the explanation will be melted into the performance somehow.

I enjoy ALL the effects I have seen you perform. Your style is sophisticated yet playful...if that makes sense? Your choice of material is based on classic stuff which you have carefully and professionally tweaked to make it uniquely yours. Most importantly, you come across as a PERFORMER, and not a guy doing a bunch of tricks.

You are truly an inspiration to our art!

Man, that was something quite special. Thanks for sharing it with us.....

A proper routine, and not just a jumbled bunch of random tricks. Wonderful performance!!!
