Yes I saw that Senor, thanks. It's a very revealing post he submitted. With all due respect to Mr. Keyl, it is clear he doesn't venture into the woods much.

And while it is possible to use nothing but a knife to build a fire, I would bet my house that maybe only 1% of the people that know it can be done, can ACTUALLY do it. In other words, you have to accept and acknowledge what you can ACTUALLY DO in a survival situation. And for me, I'll take a cell phone first. Barring that, I'll take something that will make starting a fire easy in nearly any environmental condition--and no matter what you say, that tool ISN'T A KNIFE!

It's really pointless trying to educate you Steven. You are obviously the consummate professional when it comes to survival. I hope that heals your fragile ego and we can get back to posting about survival tools. Oh and while it's futile to continue on your path, I'd just like to point out that survival is NOT a "trip" it's a lifestyle.

I am also an edged tool aficionado. There are literally hundreds of quality production knife companies available for you to choose from these days. If you want a general purpose outdoors knife General qualities you'll want to consider are: 4-6 blade length (full or stick tang) Comfortable handle -no weird shapes or textures that will raise hotspots Quality sheath with a few different carry options. TOPS Knives is a USA based company with a wide range of quality knives. (I like the DART) Cold Steel are manufactured out of the country but the SRK is a great choice Anything by Kellam or Mora are simple and functional knives General rule of thumb, the simpler the better. |

Chris, Tops and Cold Steel do make some good knives Condor may be a company you want to look into? Truth is, a knife is like a comfortable pair of underwear, once you've settled into yours, nothing else will do. I'm always uncomfortable (part of how I stay situationally aware) that's why I have so many knives. Also a knife never runs out of ammo and has so many uses I can't carry but one. I have a minimum of 2 on me at all times, even when I sleep. General rule of thumb concerning all gear "one is none and two is one."
I couldn't agree more that the "KISS" approach to all gear is good advice. But again must stress that knowledge is power and what you keep in your mind is always with you. So learn skills before bogging yourself down in gear. Together, (with skills and the proper gear) one can survive anything.

I have yet to see anything interesting out of Condor. Personally I alternate between A Grohman #4
and the Habillis Bushtool. Soo many great knives out today. Bark River is another great company with a wide variety. |

Ok forget zombie apocalypse, forget being stranded in the woods for a moment. Take away money, take away credit cards, take away identification and cell phones and computers of any type. Now you have no car or it is broke. Try getting home from 1,000 miles away. Or imagine it happening in a foreign country. Now THAT is survival!

The OP suggests survival tools in the plural, several scenarios. Recently in Northern California, a woman crashed her card down a ravine by the ocean. She was lost (and injured) for over a week, even though she was very close to the coastal highway. Cel phone was lost in the ocean. Her immediate needs were fresh water. She was able to siphon water from a stream using her car's radiator hose. She couldn't climb out of the ravine because of injuries. But for others, would rope have helped? She tried shouting to passing cars. Would her car mirror have helped? Knives are prime survival tools, but others also can be crucial. BTW, a pair of hikers discovered her; and she recovered to the delight of family and friends. An interesting side note: there was a recent TV series called "I shouldn't be alive", where every episode featured a survival scenario. Lynn

I agree. A pair of hikers is a wonderful survival tool!

She had to avoid dehydration; and she had to have the energy to at least attract the two hikers/surfers. She had 4 broken ribs, collapsed lung, 2 broken collar bones and a brain hemorrhage. Her name is Angela Hernandez for those who wish to look this up. |

I’ve watched “Naked & Afraid”. I believe 99% of those contestants would want a pair of shoes as their first item.

I took a trip one year that started in California with enough gas money to fill my car. I busked across the country to New York. It would have been a horrible reality show though.

Can I use the quarter to call someone to come pick me up?
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.
