Hey guys! Recently I’ve been fascinated with Holostages. It’s amazing what you can do with this technique, making people appear, appearantly painting with light, your imagination is the limit! However, holostages are incredibly impractical, because you need an immense sheet of glass.
Therefore, I’m wondering if there any other ways of doing something like this, or perhaps making the current method more practical or smaller somehow. Hope you can help!
Here is some inspiration:

Can you tell me a bit more than that?

I believe reedrc would be referring to the electronic version you can see on YouTube. I think these would not be in the normal budget of performing illusionist without a big financial backer. Hologram's are here now and some magicians are using them. Sorry, I did not reference the ones on YouTube to be able show you an example.

I don’t know the answer either but similar effects were demonstrated on "America’s got Talent".
I don’t know if the same technology is used but the effect looks similar.

In short, what many are calling holograms or holographic technology isn't a hologram at all but simple 2D projections reflected through a see through film that picks up the projection. Nothing more. Eyeliner screen (http://www.musion3d.co.uk/products/eyeliner/)is one example of this but keep in mind, it will NOT create a 3 dimensional image like a true hologram. It simply creates a way of visually composition of a 2D image along with the 3D talent or shapes.

There is also a mostly see through screen that will pick up projections that also creates a 2D hologram type effect.

Ray makes a good point. What's currently out there is all really based off of old school methods. All 2D surfaces I have seen a real ION laser doing holograms but that's super dangerous and isn't ready or available for public use. There are many variations of course. A fashion show here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1C4YcHLliI Musion eyeliner being the second more interesting version I've seen with Madonna and Gorillaz here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGoSlY2sT04 The AGT video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4hmELQSr70 pretty cool and a myriad of magicians have used this tech for corporate gigs making cars appear and whatnot. Dynamo one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqUVO89b1uw BMW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1si_HIbNXI MJ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDRTghGZ7XU the list is endless but some interesting examples. Ray reminded me of this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MMqlzXo1k8 that anyone can buy for an inexpensive solution as well. Examples of a large setup including load-in and time-lapse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjaRXB_kpUk and finally another setup demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSICZ_7hpho a small version of the fashion show in a smaller package scaled down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnYTfNJhbnc

Hopefully sheds some light for you..
Kind Regards

I remember a youtube reference showing 2 magicians making a car appear close to the foot lights in a theater. It was a car shown on 3 sides, and the magicians were very close to the car. No mesh screen visible. Wish I could find it, as it looked impossible.

Anyway, I am sure any of these projections would be several times more expensive then creating a Pepper's Ghost effect, even on a stage.

Black shark tooth scrim with front projection and then a rear projection screen or LED walls.
With artist in between and lit just right.. There was only one time in the video where it went from live girl to video girl.
In person it would not look as good as it does on Video.

Thanks, I hope this helps a bit.

Taylor

Years ago Siegfried and Roy were one of the first to use a full stage black scrim to make a horse vanish.. It looked pretty amazing.
Before people started using projectors with scrims at the same time.. This is becoming a fad.. There was a magician on AGT that did this sort of thing a year or so ago..
