I was just wondering about the ethics of performing street magic if
a. you have a job (not a bad job, either) and you want to make a little extra money on the side. or b. You're a student (middle-class) and want to make some walk-around money What does everyone think? |

Im confused...How does ethics play into this?
Either way...I say go for it and see what happens. James |

The more you perform the better you will get. Just keep in mind that when performing that there are some of us that make a living with this. Respect others performance space. Go for it, have fun, and most important learn all you can from the experience.

Sorry for being unclear--if you don't need the money, is it ok to perform if you'd LIKE the money? Or, if you're a student (as in a minor) is it ok to perform if you want to make some money of your own?

Why else would you perform? Yes it is OK to perform for money (and to expect to get money) even if your are one of richest people on the planet!

If you just want more money, then that's reason enough to make more money, especially if you make it doing something you love. And if you feel you have too much money.....Holler at your boy!!!!

This is not an ethical issue. Want to do it? Then do it.

Ok...if ive been using bicycle cards for the past 20 years and I decide to switch to bees on the sly...is that a conflict of interests?

Hmmm...performance money to buy more magic stuff? I don't see the conflict either.
I don't think most people got into magic because they were looking to make money. Most people want to entertain or be entertaining (opionion). Deerbourne |

Nothing bad for getting money in a good way like magic. it is much better to perform magic in the streets than pickpocketing or threatening an old lady to give you her money.

The thing is, I'd just feel kind of wrong going out there to a public space, putting a hat out, and waiting for people to put money in it. I'm not really sure why. Hmmmm...

Practice makes perfect and extra money doesn't hurt either plus you get a varied crowd reaction.

Hmmm. I have never performed on the street for totall strangers. It's just so weird. I admit that I have only been in magic for about 5 too 6 months so that not extremely long. And I don't yet have an extremly big bag of effects that I can do. So that sort of stops me but anyway. I think I am just going to have to go for it.
Do you use some sort of table outside or how do you do that? greetings Pepijn |

Pepjin: Just use table-less effects.
Everyone else: Just do it. Prospero: Try not to think about the hat.

You have people that stand on the street with signs asking for money and giving nothing in return, here you are performing magic and making somebody’s day a little brighter. Partizan: Yeah, I'm hearing some nasty stuff about MI-5 these days...
Kihei Kid: What I meant was, there ARE these people out there with signs asking for money, but that's because they are poor and homeless and need the money. I am not, and therefore feel kind of bad. |

Only feel bad if you STEAL their money.... THEN it is a matter of ethics... If they feel that you have earned their money, then they choose to give it to you... It is a gift, take it... and don't steal... you know where that gets you...

"How'd you do that?" ... "Very carefully." |
