Close-Up Cardiographic – Martin Lewis
Product description: If you don’t know the Cardiographic effect created by Martin Lewis and popularized by David Copperfield, you’ve been living under a rock! This effect had a few variations over the years: lite, signature edition, electronic edition and so on. But it was only for a stage show, nothing has really been done for close-up (you had a business card version but it wasn’t the best in my opinion). So here it is! The close-up version of Cardiographic, new working mechanism, quality pad, very well made props, I don’t know why you’re still reading this review, go out and buy it! Price and where to buy it: This is sold at $60 and you can find it in nearly every Murphy's magic partner ! What you get: The box in which everything comes in is very good, a white hard cardboard one, so it protects perfectly what’s inside. You’ll find a link for an explanation video, done by Martin Lewis himself which is not the best I’ve seen in terms of quality production but is straight to the point and easy to follow. You also get a wet erase pen, 2 “gimmick refills”, a stack of refill sheets and of course the gimmicked pad. The working is not the same as in the stage version, I think I like the close-up mechanism better. Everything is already made for you, you have a stack of 30 to 40 sheets in the pad so you have a handful of performances ready before the need to reset it. The quality of the whole project is outstanding and I can’t find anyone behind disappointed with what they receive. Teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t-4tZAK0To The pros and the cons: Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end. THE CONS: - You won’t be doing this table hopping since it will always be the same card which rises, so if people compare the souvenir sheet you left them, it will be exactly the same. THE PROS: - It’s a very visual effect and I think Martin Lewis has done a great job redesigning this miracle for close-up work. As I said, the mechanism is really cool and new, you have a full control on the rise and you can show all of your fingers. - You have a lot of sheets in the pad so you don’t have to reset every 3 performances, I like that you’re setup for at least 30 performances. - The reset is instant, no need to push anything back into places, everything is covered in the routine, I like that a lot. - The gimmicked sheet of the pad has been made out of Tyvek or a kind of plastic material, it means it’s very durable and if you take care of it, this will last a long time. - You can leave them with an impossible souvenir and they will remember you forever with this sheet. - They even included a wet erase pen in case you want to draw additional thing on the gimmick (which can be erased afterward) so you really get everything you need in order to perform this right out of the box! Overall rating: I’ve always been a huge fan of the cardiographic effect, but I didn’t do much stage show. This is, for me, the perfect version and I’ll be performing it for sure! 4/4 hearts. As for the difficulty level, you need to force a card but the handling of the pad and the gimmick is really easy, 2/5 stars. Similar products: You have all the stage version: lite, signature edition, electronic but also the close up ones that were out like the business card one. I think the close-up cardiographic is the definite answer to this effect for close-up. Might be too small a comment but I had a discriminating audience last week ...like these are my peers in the financial advisory service I travel in .. and was just killing them with new stuff some from Magic Live in fact. so I really in this case didn't have an end for this almost pick up show with a handful of effects and almost as an afterthought did I pull this one out close up cardio... ( I had been planning to show it all along)..like these guys and the president of the firm were on me but I was just slipping away on each escaping their poor guesses... well I pulled this out did the first part and I was told that the card I drew was the wrong card....sigh!
well it might be a very small point but at that moment the spec/chooser turned his card around to show me that I was wrong. that I failed.... so we a most precious pregnant pause did I appear to look alarmed and distraught but in an afterthought did I tell them to look at the pad.... again a small point but I think from now on I am going to have them prove I "drew" the wrong card because when as a result of an afterthought the card rises out of the drawing I think I got a 20% boost on the effect. subtle might be a better word but that "afterthought for the moment" was ...immeasurable I picked up my toys and left with this as the closer to a perfect show. I have a memory I will never forget ..as I hope they did too Marty the other tricks.... Steve Valentine's stacked Stickman bob the Sockless take off on Tommy Wonder's trick from Tim Conover as revealed at Magic Live! this year Boris Wild's 10 max take on the 10 card poker deal Paul Vigil's in the hand bill switch from $20 to $1 copy cat from David Paar and lastly the close up cardio maybe not in that order boy we are lucky to have access to some wonderful new ideas!!! |

Are you bringing out an 'alternative card' for this effect this month Martin?
That'll be good for Xmas events if you are. |

I've noticed that Martin has refills available in a couple different styles. A Red 7 of Diamonds and a Red 9 of Hearts. There are 50 refills in a pack for $20 from his site here:

I've ordered already but apparently a bit of delay to elsewhere in the world other than the states, but believe mine is waiting at Heathrow. Lovely item and I am using it a lot this festive period.

I got the 9 💓 reveal. It is an exceptional piece of magic, and the colour transaction is just brilliant.

I have purchased, and received, both the 7D and 9H. I purchased direct from Martin Lewis and must say that it was a real pleasure dealing with his wife Susanne. As a long time user of Martin Lewis’s effects, I knew this would be top notch. I was not disappointed! This is awesome! Yes, I will carry two pads with me when performing walk around in corporate shows. That way I will not have to limit myself to a single performance of this awesome trick. This is super practical and will blow people away - especially in a walk around situation. Congratulations Martin, you’ve hit another home run!!

It’s NOT instant reset like some of the reviews here state.
If you draw the line representing the side of the deck on in front of them (which you MUST draw to have the giveaway match up) then you have to go away in private and remove it. Which isn’t a simple matter. The apparatus included to remove the line just made an awful smeary mess every time, I have to use water and a paper towel. That whole deck line is actually unnecessary, you can just SAY it’s a deck not a card and then the card rises. THAT would make it an instant reset. Unfortunately you can’t do that because the giveaway won’t match. You can pre-draw it with everything else but then it doesn’t make sense you’ve drawn a deck not a single card. So yeah. A little more tweaking before release would have made it more practical for workers. |

YES, the re-set can be 'instant' by just leaving the 'line' on the pad that depicts the side of the deck. I agree that it can be nice to re-draw this 'line' with each new presentation, but at the same time, my experience has been that this is NOT necessary. I have performed this both ways, drawing the line each time and just leaving the line on the pad. Not once has anyone ever questioned either presentation.
During a recent 4 hour strolling show at a local Casino, I performed this trick over and over, even right on the gaming floor! I can honestly say that Close-Up Cardiographic absolutely fried the audiences, again and again - drawing the 'line', or not, just didn't seem to matter. Close-Up Cardiographic is an ABSOLUTE GEM! THIS IS A REAL WORKER! |

Does anyone have any more tips on how to improve the smoothness of the rising card. I have been through the normal online tutorial and followed the tips but it tends to spring up a bit about quarter of the way then again just over half way. I haven't taken the gimmick apart yet as I preferred to get some advice first. I have been practising a lot with different thumb positions and pressure and on some occasions I can get it smoother but only at an unreasonably slow speed it's not working consistently for me. Any advice, tips etc would be really appreciated.

I have found that holding the pad during the rise, with your thumb on the side of the picture instead of below slows for a much smoother rise. I also found a way of tearing off the giveaway that works very well. Instead of trying to pull the sheet off after flipping the page and cover back simply flip back and smear the giveaway page forward and tear off. Works great,

I was struggling to make the flip and tear of the page smooth. Here are the tweaks that made a huge difference for me:
1. I trimmed about a millimeter off the top of every sheet including the covers. This allowed the sheets to travel around the coil without snagging. (The snagging was what kept me from performing this effect prior to implementing this fix.) 2. I put a bend in the bottom corners of the giveaway sheet. Like you're going to dog ear it but don't crease it. That creates a gap that your finger can find easily when it's time to flip the lot over. It also makes it easier to separate that sheet so you can tear it off. Great effect. I had some other ideas for tweaks or for "version 2". I may further modify my pad. Anyway, I hope the above tips help those of you who bought CUG to perform it more easily and reliably. |

I guess you could, but it would be stupid and doesn’t make sense. For the logic of the trick you have to draw the deck afterwards. Then the card rises as a prover and your funny joke turns into real magic. That’s the effect. You must draw the line while they watch. |

I stopped erasing the line between performances. Too messy. I agree that most internal logic comes from drawing it after but I also found it makes the trick a little long for a stroller. When they say its the wrong card I just call attention to the lines and say it’s a deck not a single card and it feels like it is working that way. I do like the idea of naming the card first or even having it shown. The implication is that you could have made any card rise out but you are making their named card rise out.

Yes, they must name it. So to them it’s any card named can rise.
