At the top of the "New to magic?" forum is a thread that is pinned as a `sticky', entitled Magic books & Videos for beginners.
Isn't it perhaps time to "unsticky" or "unpin" that thread and post a new one? The original thread was posted in 2003 and was locked in 2004. In other words, it's now marked as "TOPIC IS LOCKED", and has been that way for 14 years. That's a long time! It seems to me that it is perhaps outdated at this point, at least as far as videos are concerned. For example, one of the recommended videos given there was VHS only, but now we are in an era of DVDs and digital downloads. Furthermore, in the last 14 years, there have been some excellent videos that have been released, for example there is R. Paul Wilson's DVD companion to the Royal Road to Card Magic, Robert Giobbi's Card College 1 & 2 course, and Oz Pearlman's Born to Perform Card Magic (completely re-filmed, expanded and updated in 2014). I'm sure there are others besides these that could be recommended, and none of these are mentioned there, nor can they be because the topic is locked. It's not a good look for newcomers, nor is it ideally helpful - even though obviously many of the recommended books are still good. But even the books list needs an update. For example, Darwin Ortiz' book "Strong Magic" about presentation has had an excellent follow-up entitled "Designing Miracles", which is about constructing magic, and deserves mention alongside his "Strong Magic" title. Hereby a humble request: could we "unsticky" the old thread, and start a new one that is more current, and can serve as a "sticky" or "pinned" thread? Perhaps someone can have a shot at writing a good initial post, similar to the existing thread, but incorporating more recent material as well, and the admins can do their technical wizardry to pin the new thread instead of the old one? |

I agree. There is a lot of new stuff out there, including on-courses, that will benefit newbies.

Roberto Giobbi has produced a Card College video instruction course, and this is billed as an introduction to all the fundamentals of card magic: Card College 1 & 2 Personal Instruction The Complete Course https://www.robertogiobbi.com/site/produ......e-course It was originally sold as a set of 4 DVDs of nearly 8 hours, but is now available as a digital download via his website. You can purchase it either as a package, or you can buy the individual chapters/lessons for €4.95 each. In fact, the first lesson (Fundamental Techniques) is available in entirety for free here, as a sampler: Lesson 1: Fundamental Techniques https://www.robertogiobbi.com/site/produ......amentals Material like this should definitely be included, so that people are aware of top notch resources like the Giobbi video set. |

I'm not a cardician, but Ender's Game's comments make good sense. Perhaps some card guys will add their thoughts.

Good news - the Magic books & Videos for beginners thread has been unlocked. Thank you manager Dave Scribner for arranging this!
This means we can now add information about great resources that have appeared since it was originally locked in 2004. I've made a start by recommending three great video resources that newcomers to magic can use to learn the fundamentals of card magic - see the post here (link). So go ahead and add other suggestions of current material that has been produced over the last 14 years, and that you think would be helpful for beginners to be aware of. |

I wonder if a book that "saw the light" about 56 YEARS AGO would "be helpful for beginners to be aware of." That even "goes" for some books that came out 40/30/20/10, etc., years ago. Just curious.
