My new ebook on the memorized deck, The Road to Riffsville, will be available within a day or so. Here's a blog post filling you in on why I wrote it and what it contains.

I picked it up a hour ago or so, along with The Real Deal.

I must confess, due to what Mr. Close wrote on page eight I am unable to go any further.
(In other words, I haven't yet mastered my stack of choice, The Redford Stack, but I'm working on it.)

So, instead of continuing reading, I switched to the August newsletter.

Loving it.

Dave:

You should still read through The Road to Riffsville, if only to see what is possible once you get some experience with the memdeck. As you'll see, it's not that difficult.

Best of luck on your journey of discovery.

Steve Bedwell has this to say about The Road to Riffsville: "Can't put The Road to Riffsville down and focus on anything else. (Especially frustrating because I'm at MAGIC Live!) Fascinating analysis of some of the issues I've personally experienced with the estimation aspects of memdeck work, with robust solutions. An outstanding contribution!"

I purchased The Road to Riffsville yesterday. I finished the first read through last night. As always, Mr. Close has produced a fantastic book. His thoughts on the all around square glimpse alone are worth the price of the book. The real meat of the book is section 5 where we learn how to get to literally any card in the deck. Anyone interested in The Berglass Effect or Mnemonicosis or The Trick That Can Not Be Explained needs to have this work in their collection. It really is a master class on working this kind of effect.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Road to Riffsville.

The stand outs for me were Part One and Part Seven.
Part One for his stance on Jazzing. He brilliantly clarifies and redefines some concepts and jargon.
Part Seven for an intimate glimpse at creating opportunities and capitalising on them.

This work is one of reflection by a Master. He not only offers what works for him, if you read closely he is offering insights that can apply to everyone. This is definitely an important contribition to memorized deck magic.
Moreover I'm proud to see he implicitly sets down an agenda for future dialogue and exploration with memdeck work that the literature sorely needed.

Highly recommended. Its foundational.

Best,
Jed

The reviews for The Road to Riffsville are coming in. Here are three excerpts:

“Revising and clarifying his own analogy from the world of music (‘jazzing’ being the operative term here), Mike thoroughly demystifies the concept of ‘improvising’ with a memorized deck. If you follow his Road to Riffsville, you will want (and be able!) to start riffing away almost immediately.” – Pit Hartling

“I was struck by how much a simple statement would illuminate something for me.” – Randy Naviaux

“This work is one of reflection by a Master. Michael not only offers what works for him, if you read closely, he offers insights that can apply to everyone. This is definitely an important contribution to memorized deck magic...It’s foundational.” – Jed Brooks Smith

Don’t stop reading even Mike told you from page 8 :p
I can only call myself half-proficience when it comes to memorized deck, it take at least one second for me to recall the position and vice-versa
But I’ve been fascinated by the possibilities of “riffing” with mem deck for months after watching Vincent Haden’s Penguin lecture
And the only thing I do that’s remotely related to this type of magic is Simon Aronson’s Two beginning.
This book for me, along with Burglas effect , are the final words when it come to “improvising” with mem deck

The among of works I put into after 3 days of reading and practing is almost life changing
The false faro as well as various Revealing methods is just so overwhelming(in a great way)
I can only hope I get the mem deck down cold soon enough so I can apply what I learn effectively
But so far, I have blown away few layman’s and magicians mind by reading what I learn so far from this book
I will leave chapter 7 to the last when I’m 100% confidence with my stack

A completely fantastic resource for fans of the memorized deck. I agree with the notion that revelations (in a riffing situation) should be magical. I just love this system and will definitely be using it.

Michael, I'd be happy to leave a review on your site but I've tried half a dozen or so times today and I keep getting an error message involving the words parameter, error and ID. I'm flummoxed.

That said, my review gets more glowing every time I redo it so by the time this is resolved it should be the bestest ever review of anything. Smile
