I tend to go for phrases similar these. Often with a relevant intriguing/engaging descriptor added on, such as "using just your imagination", or "A little journey in your mind's eye"

I like when doing a 'spectator-as-mindreader' effect also, as the idea of a trick/effect does not really fit, since it's all about their ability.

(This thread reminded me of Gob from 'Arrested Development' who preferred illusions over the word 'trick'. Love that show).

It takes a pretty special character to pull off the "I don't know how it works" thing consistently.

I think for most audiences it's condescending. I know I always thought so. You don't get to do a show that people pay for without knowing that what you're going to do will be reliable, and that means you know how it works.
