I like mentalism books & manuscripts (be they electronic or physical, and I actually print out a lot of eBooks.) I have accumulated countless modern mentalism effects and books, and many of them are great.
However, I REALLY like old, vintage, classic mentalism books & manuscripts. The history, craftsmanship, and design/thinking that went into them form how I approach and use the craft today. I like knives. In my former lines I work I have accumulated every form of modern combat and tactical knife known to man, and many of them are great. However, I REALLY like old knives. The history, craftsmanship, and design/thinking that went into them form how I approach and use the craft today. I LOVE new/modern mentalism that utilizes the tried-and-true concepts that have worked for the last century while incorporating the refinements, tweaks, and sophistications that a century of performances and standing the test and rigors of time can bring. As an analogy, my choice of a daily carry knife is my fairly modern Swiss Army Huntsman with limited-edition dark walnut scales instead of the red plastic. It has a sharp, classic look, all the old-school utility in the world, yet is crafted of today's finest materials utilizing design tweaks and refinements that have evolved over many, many years. I change out my carry on occasion, but this is the one that I always go back to. Richard Osterlind's "Diverse Deceptions" pair of books is that limited edition classic knife. It initially struck me as odd, but now fitting, that this knife was the first thing I thought of when these arrived the mail. I re-read my books often, and I will certainly be going back to these two for many years to come. Coming from a performer of Richard's caliber, these are books that will be two additional classics to us to refer back to for decades. Just a tiny tweak in a handling, a line, or a small insight from Richard is more than worth the price of admission on ANY of his products, and these are marvelous examples of that. They MORE than meet that criteria, and for that reason alone I would heartily recommend them. (Heck, in the last effect of the first book I gained a tiny tweak in a fold for a p&&& that I had been playing with on and off for years and could never get down the way I wanted. In just two seconds Richard put another POWERFUL weapon in my pocket.) The above praise hasn't even mentioned the actual effects! Watches, billets, books...oh, and a "small" aside: HIS ENTIRE BLINDFOLD ACT! These are going to be nestled amongst my classic Christophers, Annemanns, Osterlinds,Cassidys, et.al. Thanks, Richard. I also had a great collection of knives that I got from my travels of over 20 years in the Army but the lot was stolen in a move from Germany to the USA along with other things. I used to carry a Fairbairn when deplored. My picks now are a Law enforcement Ka-Bar last ditch knife and a clinch Pick knife for EDC.
I don't have either of the two books that you have mention, so I will take a look. R |

Sea: it is simply, appropriately, titled "More Diverse Deceptions."
R: that stinks about the theft. (as an aside, that K-Bar LD in a reverse Kerambit grip is a great choice for the the specific application it was designed for....) Do yourself a favor and check out these books. I think it will be well worth it, and will be tomes that you will re-read often, and gain something each time. Bryn

IMO these are the two best mentalism books of the year. I have got so much out of them! Absolutely love the 5 Star Prediction Revisited/Double Envelope!

Thanks Bryn, I'll check them out. My favourite so far is the watch effect, it's a beautifully classical type effect. Oh and the newspaper test routine is very well put together. Great stuff
P.s. I have a number of victornox Swiss knives and a few scarier looking ones I used to carry when diving

I have the first one and it's great. That do---e envelope is so deceptive and has so many uses. I instantly came up with an original routine for it that I fell in love with. The chapters on 4th dimensional telepathy and how to rehearse are priceless. The card trick in the book, although I haven't tried it out yet, would be a total knock out. Osterlind is that one creator who never disappoints. Looking forward to getting the second one soon.
