The World has lost a great artist and Detroit has lost a great ambassador.
RIP Queen of Soul

I said to my Mom the other night, "Maybe she's waiting for the 16th."
Elvis Presley passed on 41 years ago, today. |

Very sweet pic, Mike! I was just thinking of Aretha's "Think" in Blues Brothers. She directed the song at Matt "Guitar" Murphy who, himself, just passed away in June of this year. In the film: Ray Charles, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Carrie Fisher, John Belushi... all so sad. And now Aretha. Listened to her for the whole day yesterday. Lynn

Others (I regrettably missed) who have passed who were in "Blues Brothers": John Candy, Pinetop Perkins, John Lee Hooker, Henry Gibson, Charles Napier (the Good Ol Boys)... all losses in comedy and the Blues! A tribute to Aretha mentioned her performance in the movie as being a shot in the arm in her career! Remember, "You better THINK about the consequences of your actions!" ps. kudos to Laurie (and special mention to $2000magician) who noticed the irony of Aug 16. Lynn

I guess I will be the first to mention her surname: Franklin.

Well, no disrespect was ever intended, but "Aretha" is all you need to understand who we are paying homage to.
Groucho is Marx, not me. Elvis is Presley, not Costello. And I like Costello quite a bit. Aretha.

I loved Respect when it was released in 1967, but never really liked her vocals on anything else. That kind of screeching generally doesn’t appeal to me. Nevertheless, Aretha was an incredible influence on subsequent generations of singers.

I loved just about all her vocals. She was one of those young Black voices, who helped bring gospel music changes into the general musical lexicon. When I first heard "Never Loved a Man", it just about brought me to tears. The story of "Respect" is very interesting in that although it was an Otis Redding song; it meant something a lot different for women. (Roe v Wade didn't become law until 1973). No wonder it was a smash for her. Lynn
