Hi
I have been really enjoying watching some of 'The Sacred Riana' performances on AGT, BGT & Asia's Got Talent. I love this kind of Bizarre/horror magic. As as result I bought Dark Matter Secrets: 80 Years Of Spooky Magic by Abbott Magic Co. Can anyone point to other similar acts to the 'The Sacred Riana' and further reading in this area? Many thanks in advance |

I was not blown away by the effects she did. But I was floored at how much more powerful those effects were in combination with her character and theming of the performances. She is almost more compelling as a character than she is as a magician. She really is doing magic with an approach I personally have not seen before. Its very entertaining and emotion-driving.

That is what I really like, the whole atmosphere and the way that she weaves a horror story and uses the effects to bring the audience into the narrative,

Follow-up article for the disgraceful way AGT treated her performance, truly shameful, if it was "too scary" then they should have made that discretionary call prior to televising the performance:

Thanks for the link, interesting article, shame as I loved the originality of her act and the story involved
I hope that she does a tour and comes to London, |

For newer magicians interested in Bizzare Magick, this can be a good lesson here. As someone who has coached several AGT contestants in past seasons, I stated in several previous other Café posts that even though she won other Asia/Britain "Got Talents" that she wouldn't go that far here.
This is a risk you run if you are choosing a style and act that won't play for mainstream America, if it won't play in Peoria as the old show business adage states. As for "how she was treated" again this is exactly what she and her type of act brought on herself. She was treated exactly as she conditioned the judges, producers, and the audience through her imaging and act. Branding, imaging, positioning and all that goes with it is something every performer must consider, as it is about much more than just your performance material and "a character" (as currently being discussed in another thread here). If you are going to choose this type of an act with such a strong imaging, you must be prepared for it to carry through in all aspects and be prepared to deal with such results and possible consequences. Magic (especially good magic) is about far more than just performing the tricks. For newbies or those newer to magic, there is much to be learned here as it is about far more than just performing tricks. |

Talking about AGT Magicians - don't remembr his name - but the Character Magician - who previously(sp?) sliced a pineapple on Howies head , later shot an apple of the head - goofed this time- Befor was skill- this time an OLD simple 'stick it to you trick' - needing NO skill - if you noticed he coverd himself by saveing Howie , moving his hand to the safe one - and it was as the judges said toooo long for such a simple TRICK(that is simple for us who know). Just my opnion -

I remember that one, seems to me that a lot of the good magic acts have been dismissed, shame, I have stopped watching it now, also with Fool Us being cancelled not sure where I will be able to see so many magic acts in one place,

I may have got this wrong, I thought that it might have been cancelled for season 6, but I think it was there actual vegas show that had to be postponed owing to an injury, apologies I did not mean to cause any panic,
I will have a look out for Magic Masters, not sure where I can see it in the UK, |

Russo - at 92 I remember everything. Start reading the good stuff (stop using age as an excuse!) - and you'll be able to do the same.
