I've been doing a lot of research on types, sizes, material comp, etc., but I'm still confused on a few things. I bought a 12" diamond cut ( https://www.larocksmagic.com/Diamond-Cut......5552.htm ) and I love how big it looks in production compared to a tiny red 9" square. However, I can start to see runs in the silk after 2 weeks or so of using it.
Any links to really high quality, diamond-cut silks that will produce/disappear for years on end? I saw somewhere that the silk material can be mixed with another material to increase its strength. Any info on that? |

Talk to Bob Sanders his Dovelite silks are good quality and reasonably priced. If money isn't issue then go to Silk King Studios and get some top quality Rice silks.

The bad news is that once the diamond cut silks I have now are gone, there will be no more. (The people in China who made them for me no longer sew silk but assemble refrigerators instead.) Good diamond cut silks are 100% pure China silk and another key to spot the difference is that all four sides are equal. (Cheap ones have a short side and a long side meaning the center corners of the silk are not in the center!) A 12" diamond cut looks like an 18" square but only takes the space of a 9" square. (All silks are ONLY measured by the hemmed edges and NEVER diagonally. Dealers don't buy them by the diagonal measurements. Avoid dealers quoting diagonal measurements as silk size. Over pricing is frequently the motivation.)
Holes punched into silk is likely from nails of the performer. Using the pads of the finger to push the silk into whatever gimmick should solve the problem. I have silks I have used over 40 years and they are still flawless. (I have also damaged my share too! LOL) Enjoy your silk magic. |

This is an interesting topic. Instead in the size I am interested in the actual kind of silk that is commonly used.
There are so many... Honan, Pongé, Habotai and on and on... If there is no really preferred one, could anyone say what the silk should weigh? (maybe g/qm²). I am planning something special and don't want to order a meter of every silk available to find a suitable one. Thanks for your time, Markus |

Markus M, I have to say, it does not matter. What is commonly used with the TT, is a small 9 inch silk, you can get them from Laflin Family Magic. You can sometimes use a 12 inch, but I have know information on how you TT is fitting you. So my advice would be to buy one of each, and see which you like best, and fits the best to your likely.
You will receive, most likely, a 3 momme weight silk. That is a measurement for how opaque the silk fibers are spaced to make the silk material. You will find that with use, there are no more wrinkles showing, like there were when you first started to use it. Magic supply dealers do not know the information you requested. |

If you are seeing runs and pulled strands from the silk, you are handling this delicate fabric to roughly. Also, your hands should be clean and not dry, with skin flakes sticking out even a millimeter. I suggest not only cleaning your hands, but using a good non-greasy hand lotion. Clip you nails, and clean under them as well. |

Thanks Bill for sharing your knowledge,
that bit about the momme was very helpful. I already own a drawer full of TTs and found 'mine'. Have a good time, Markus |

Just received a Dovelite 12" Diamond Cut Silk. Ordered Tuesday, got here today (Friday).
WOW. This thing looks huge and beautiful. It is much bigger than the one I ordered from the OP. Plus, this Dovelite silk is even cheaper, as Bob Sanders doesn't charge shipping if he can mail it in a letter-sized envelope. Excellent silk. It flows out of the hand so naturally and magically. Appearing/disappearing the silk looks so wonderful as the hole it leaves/hole it takes up is such a stark contrast. |
