Folks into jazz will know this name! Roy was a very innovative trumpeter, who although he played and composed jazz, also lent his music to other music projects. He was only 49, but had kidney disease and died as a result last Friday in New York. I have a vivid personal memory of him playing in a classroom at San Jose State as a young man, and thinking " jazz people are going to be hearing about this guy." Lynn

I am a jazz fan, but must admit I never heard Hargrove. However, every time one of these musicians dies (which is quite often nowadays), it reminds me that my time is at hand!

I did some math, and realize he was only 21 when I saw him dazzle the fellow musicians in San Jose. He was a sideman to both jazz and pop celebrities, from Erykah Badu to Herbie Hancock to Michael Brecker; and his long time friend was Christian McBride. I noticed one reviewer called him "unselfish"; perhaps he let the music take the spotlight instead of himself. Lynn
