I've been working on a 3-Fly for performance but it is so extensive and heavy for a close up/table performance, compared to a lot of the tricks I do. What are some of your favorite, quick, and easy expanded [ tricks? What are some resources (aside from Bobo's) that you would recommend in this regard?

I really like Roth's Coins Across...I think it's just so immediately impossible looking.
There are a few [ effects out there that are quite nice that I've seen, like from Homer Liwag, his stellar, "Coin One." And there's a nice 3 Fly with a [ that I remember from David Gabbay that was pretty neat too.

David Neighbors has a “Super Simple Matrix” in print that uses an expanded half dollar shell. It was one of the first things I ever learned using a shell (many years ago), it’s accurately named (super simple, and quick but strong), and I still use it to this day.
At about the same time, I also learned Bobo’s coins through the table (the one that uses a shell and an inverted shot glass). It too would seem to fit the bill for what you’re looking for.

I’m referring to his effect specifically entitled “Super Simple Matrix” (literally — that’s its exact title, in print), which is the very first effect in his 1987 publication “Coinjuring.”
(Oops — I see that David himself posted, just moments before I finished typing my own reply.)

Directing this back to the OP’s request for recommended resources for shell-using effects, David Neighbors’ works in general are a gold mine in this regard.

Mark Mason has a routine with his Ultimate Shell (is that his name for his full-coverage shell?), which is the first coins across routine that I have managed to do. And I've been trying a long time, I'm 65.
Really simple, effective and the last bit happens in the spectators hand. Of course, it can be done with any shell set, not just his. I use a soft Barber set, love the feel of it |

Hello all
At the table I love Geoff Latta's Slippery Silver. Standing I prefer Roth's shell coins across. Slippery Silver you can follow straight into a 'thru the table or ch*nk - a - ch*nk (are we allowed to call it that anymore ?) Regards Nev P.S this is my first post... hope everyone is well and greetings from across the pond

Interesting observation on the use of the term "chink-a-chink." I believe it was S. Leo Horowitz who first used this label for the open-handed assembly, in his case of sugar cubes. He would cover two cubes, one with each hand, wiggle his fingers and say "chink-a-chink" and then lift his hands showing that one of the cubes had magically moved to join the other. The original routine may have been Malini's, but I'm not sure. Others with more knowledge of magic history can chime in here. Horowitz went by the name Mohammed Bey. He looked Turkish and wore a fez to accent the look. I don't know if that is the equivalent of actors performing in blackface, but it's close. Certainly, the trend during the early 20th century of magicians dressing as Asians was. This can be forgiven a bit, because Asia, to Westerners, had an aura of mystery. There's been some discussion of the appropriateness of the use of fake Chinese coins and props with fake Chinese characters. Well, there I go again, off on a tangent. In any event, thanks for your contribution and, once again, welcome to the Café. |

This brings me to maybe another thread. I had to put my stuff in storage and when pulling my shell out and putting all the coins with the right ['s I noticed that I had one [ that fit one half '66 half dollar perfectly. But then I had two other ['s that fit 1972 half dollars perfectly but they were too small for the '66. The newer ones have ridges and the older dollar looks like it may have more silver. I'm now confused as to what to do. I was trying to do a good coins across but if I use the [ that fits the 66 it jiggles with the newer coins. Do I just need to find more silver half d's that are larger or get more newer half d's that fit the smaller ['s? Sorry if this is off topic but a speed bump on the way to a good coins across that's got me confused.
Thanks for your time! |
