Fascinating subject, to be sure. A great resource along these lines is: “Suggestible You”, by Erik Vance. It takes a deep dive into the information in the posted article. It is fascinating.

In my opening "Claimer" I use the word "Placebonic" however I may need to use the word "Placebic" instead... But I like my version better. I'll look up the Vance work!!! Sounds so interesting...Thanks...

Did you hear about the doctor who gave his patient a gift of sugar pills for X-mas. He wrapped them in a Place-bow.

The placebo effect borders on "real" magic in my opinion. It has always fascinated me. Fake input, real output. Mind......blown.......

Not to sour the waters but pushing placebos, is real quackery. Haven't we all seen how psychic surgery bilks people out of millions only to stop them from seeking REAL medical treatment? I think as entertainers, we should stay well away from advocating such so called cures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDh_38iDg0o Some would say it's the placebo effect at work when good things happen but what about when the patient dies? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ClZOuitwXs
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.

The interesting thing about placebos is that they work at all, so they are worthy of study. Understanding the placebo effect would considerably improve our knowledge of how the body works. This doesn't mean that it should routinely be used for treatment, though.
For what it's worth, my personal opinion is that placebos work in a similar way to hypnotherapy. No-one really understands that either. Barry |

Senor, you do kind of come across as a bit preachy sometimes. No offense, as it may be a language thing. That said, I don’t think anyone was advocating steering people away from getting proper medical care.
Placebo effect is a documented, though poorly understood, phenomenon. The reason for placebos in drug testing is especially because some people do recover from illnesses just because they are convinced they will. This is not “pushing placebos,” nor is it “quackery.” It is a legitimate area of study for anyone interested in how the human mind works. Which I would expect to include anyone on this board. Just because people are fascinated with it does not mean anyone here would attempt to steer people away from doctors. That looks remarkably like a straw man argument being set up. Patrick |
