Does anyone have this effect, and what do they think of it?

Hello Joe:
I don't have it, but have seen it performed a few times. It's a real fooler. I once had a chance to see and handle the Owen version, and it is a work of art - costs about the same as an art piece too. Each time I saw it, it was just presented as a magic trick demo - no routine or storyline. I think with an effective story, it could be a very strong routine. Ron |

Nice piece for a collection. I think an antique magic act would play well if presented as a glimpse into yesteryear.
Click Here! This effect was a collectors piece when I began magic in the 1960's. Have seen it, to many gimmicks and they get nicked up easily as the paint is not chip resistant. |

I own an olde Thayer Blue Phantom with the stenciled beatles. It works fine and has a reasonable bit of paint scrapes as you would suspect from an item this old. It occupies a place of honor in my "accumulation" having its own display case.
I agree that it's probably more of a "puzzle" by today's standards, but just the thought of the history it has seen when it was performed by previous owners makes it a real treasure to me. |

Tommy Windsor added an ending to Blue Phantom that adds some structure to the trick. It's called Climax Blue Phantom, see Suitcase Side Show. The modified prop may be in a museum here. I will check Thuesday.

I have two Owen Blue Phantoms in my collection, one fairly new and the other from the 50s. I also built two versions of the effect using slightly different mechanisms. The effect is more than a puzzle if performed correctly. Because there are two different gaffs involved it is very difficult to work out the method without knowing a lot about apparatus magic. I think the effect is a stunner and I perform it regularly.

The Blue Phantom has always been a favorite of mine and I'm pleased to announce that we (Wellington Enterprises) have developed the prototype of a new model which will fool those who are familiar with the original method. This new version will have several improvements. The tube will only be as tall as the 7 checkers - no room for an extra checker. The checkers can be shown to be separate at any point in the trick - including when the blue checker is in the middle. The checkers can be unstacked at any time. The base is decptively designed to be thinner than the height of a checker. You don't have to do any lifting. Quality will of course be top notch. One of the things I've been considering is the color of the checkers. I'd be curious as to what those who admire the trick think the best colors would be. Is the blue and yellow still the best? How about a metallic blue and silver? Any other suggestions would be welcome for consideration. Thanks.
Best to all, Bill Schmeelk |

Bill,
I love this effect as well and own several versions (including Magic Wagon) and cant wait for your version to come out. I hate to say it but I like the Yellow/Blue color combination the best and would suggest you stick with that. Either way I will jump on whichever colors you come up with so put me on your list. Do you have a time frame yet of release? Thanks Charlie |

Great news to hear, my order will be in when your phantom is ready to be released. How about a polished brass top & base with black metallic tube - gold disks and a black phantom chip? Chris |

Wow Bill, if you guys are putting this out it will indeed be awesome. I don't care much about the color of the checkers, but please err on the side of simplicity with the graphics on the tube and base. Your natural wood products are outstanding due to their elegance and sophistication. One exception for me however, was your Mystery of the Pyramids Outdone. While I'm sure the quality was top notch as always, the graphics kept me away from this great effect.
This is just one dude's opinion however, so take it for what it's worth. But I would love to see this effect with minimal, or no graphics at all, so we can just present an awesome mystery and not have our audience distracted by a strangely decorated tube. Again...this is just me.

Thanks for the comments. After hearing from several, I'm tending to stick with the yellow and blue. The gold and black is interesting, but opinions seem to favor the more traditional colors. I was planning to chrome plate the outer tube, with a black or walnut top - no decoration on the tube.

Not concerned about what the final colors will be, but if chrome might be the choice for the outer tube consider all the disks be blue and the phantom one be yellow. Blue Color with Chrome compliment each other and will look great together. The news of using no decoration is a good move. Again, I'm very excited to hear about this new project from Wellington. You can count me in for one no matter what!

Now you're talking Bill. This sounds beautiful. Can you reveal anything regarding release date or price point at this time?

The prototype for this new Blue Phantom is complete except for the painting and outer tube. I must also make some decisions about the base. Most of it will be machined from PVC plastic and painted black. I'm going to try a couple options on the prototype before deciding whether to make a portion of it from natural finished walnut. The base sits on three chrome balls as feet. I am hoping to have a full working model complated in time for the collectors meet in Washington D.C. this April.

Dear Bill,
Being a proud owner of some of your previous releases (Mystery of the pyramids, mini and regular switch boards), I'm much excited about a Wellington Blue Phantom! Please keep us informed of any further development! Regarding the colors, I think that the "blue checker" is a must (in respect to the name of this classic!) But I will rather go with white (instead of yellow) for the other checkers... only a matter of personnal taste... and a slight differenciation from the usual colors... my 2¢... Thanks for sharing this great news with us! Simon |

I also wonder if the choice of finishes for the checkers and tube interior could take into consideration the scuffs left behind on the checkers after multiple performances. Perhaps the checkers could have a sealant that could allow for cleaning with mild abrasives, and the coating on the interior of the tube could be water soluble, or cleanable with store-bought cleansers and/or soaps, so the scuffs will come off the checkers.
Keep in mind, I have no idea what I'm talking about regarding the feasibility of this...just noticed with my Owen set, the scuffs on the lighter-colored checkers.
