A while back I read/heard a statment from one of the large balloon manufacturers (I don't remember which one) that stated it would be extremely rare for a 160 or 260 type balloon to pop in a way that would block a childs airway. When a 160 or a 260 pops it leaves a long thin shred, not a round patch. They by no means said it was not possible, but that it was highly unlikely. A balloon twister's biggest risk if from using round balloons.
I don't know if this is true or not, I'm just passing on what I remember. |

No, derrick, 260s do often burst into many small fragments, plenty of which could easily choke a child. The truth is, there is a danger if the child puts the balloon in its mouth, which is what all very young children seem to want to do. I make balloons for smaller kids, but always tell Mum or Dad that they should take the balloon away if the child puts it in their mouth. I explain that it IS a choking hazard, then they are fully aware of the dangers, and will ensure that the child does NOT suck or bite the balloon.
Balloons have caused me a few minor injuries over the years, nothing serious, but enough that I have respect for them, and am aware how dangerous they potentially can be. I once had a nasty cut from stretching a balloon too far, and was lucky that the kids holding the other end weren't hurt also. Bursting balloons can really hurt if they hit your face too, especially if they burst during inflation. I try my best to inflate the balloons away from the kids' direction. |

It's not children who are in danger but babies. Please make one for the baby. Like Potty, I explain the dangers and put the BIG aninal up on atop shelf. I never make mice for babies. Something too big for them to hold.
Strange to say it usually the downmarket parties which produce those requests. More affluent parties don't. Make of that what you will.

I don't make balloons much any more and I usually use the choking hazard thing as a great excuse not to do so. I actually hate doing the bloody things!

I forget who I saw do this, but a very neat trick, which I would consider for older kids, was to swallow the balloon sword as described at the top of this thread. Then, the balloon was removed from the mouth STILL FULLY INFLATED! Presumably the magi used a "fingertip inflator" to re-inflate the balloon. It looks awesome, and won a big round of applause in the performance I saw.

I agree it is inappropriate for kids.

I've seen several performers do this and I've never found it to be entertaining.
