Can I find any books on card sleights and flourishes in Borders, Barnes and Noble, or something? If it’s there, does anyone know what section it is in?

Hi Jenuwin!
I have seen, "Mark Wilson’s Cyclopedia Of Card Magic" (a very small version of the original), but extremely, "loaded" with sleights etc, at Barnes and Noble. Gotta love Mark Wilson’s stuff as it’s generally one of the, "staples" that alot of magicians get first, and find themselves referring to for great reference. So much of it is so darn good! You’ll probably find, "The Magic Of Micah Lasher" also in Barnes and Noble. Some pretty good stuff regarding sleights etc, that you may be looking for! Probably one of the, "gems" that I have found is, Bill Tarr’s, "Now You See It, Now You Don’t" which also has great card, "sleights" and other magic. Check out, The "Barnes and Noble" bargain section as well, which is generally in the front of the store. Sometimes you find some hard to find magic books in this section as well. I think you’ll find some useful books! Good Luck! P.S. You can find them in the "Games" section! _________________ Courage is the willingness to be afraid and act anyway!

Any of the Magic Books by Dover Publishing would be available there--though you might have to have them ordered:
Expert Card Technique Sach’s Sleight of Hand Later Magic Hugard’s Card Manipulations Encyclopedia of Card Tricks

You will usually find magic books in the game section.

I couldn’t really find much of a selection at the book stores, so I’m thinking of buying on the internet. Any suggestions?
I was thinking Jean Hugard’s "Royal Road To Card Magic" and "Expert Card Technique". Does anyone know what sleights and flourishes it covers? |

Both of those books are excellent and cover pretty much all the basics. I recommend http://www.discountmagic.com
as an excellent source. Good prices, good service, and I know he has Royal Road in stock.

Both RR & Card Technique cover more material than most guys will ever use. Both are super books. Concerning Barnes & Noble, why waste time with them when you have access to the net and the best magic material available? Buy on the net, find great products & forget the sales taxes.

I would highly recommend the Jeff McBride Art of card manipulation videos if you are interested in flourishes.
check them out. |

A few of my friends have found Expert at the Card Table at Barnes & Noble.
If your looking for Flourishes you should try this site. http://www.pasteboardanimations.com I hear these guys are nutty with a deck of cards. |

In addition to the other books that have been suggested, you also might want to purchase a copy of Jerry Mentzer's COUNTS, CUTS, MOVES AND SUBTLETY from any of the on line magic stores.

Shouldn't we also mention the Card College Series by Roberto Giobbi? I don't have any of these, but my impression from all the press has been that these would represent a replacement for Royal Road as the beginner's choice.
I have Royal Road, and plan to get the Card College series some day... Of course, you won't find these at Barnes & Noble. Doug A. |

I would disagree with that. Simply because of the expense, I would recommend RR or ECT to the beginner. After he has advanced a bit and decided whether he likes card magic enough to continue in it, THEN would be the time to invest the $125-$160 for Card College.

That's good to know guys! Thanks!
But, how does Card College compare to these others? Again, you have $30 compared to $10-$20, but is the quality of instruction better? Just wondering... Doug A. |

"Better" is a very subjective term. Card college is NEWER, and as such includes some sleights that hadn't yet been invented when the others were written. It also includes different and newer tricks, although I'd wager the effects from the older books would be new to 99.999% of laymen.
Again, I advise the older ones to beginners simply because as a beginner, you don't know yet if you'll like card magic well enough to stick with it. Any one of these books would give the reader more than enough material to make a living and create his own effects. So it's up to you. I have all of them, and find them all useful. But I have been in magic for a long time and have over 1200 magic books. What I have and what I enjoy and find useful at this point in my magic career probably has little if any bearing on what you might enjoy at this stage of yours!

Scott,
Thanks for the informative posts. I guess what I was getting at was the quality of the instruction. Practice by itself doesn't always help IF you are practicing a move in the wrong way. Thus, it is important to have correct instruction, so that when you practice, you are actually improving. There certainly is still room for subjectivity. One person may think a double lift works best done one way, someone else may like another. Thanks again. Doug A. |

The quality of instruction is excellent in all of them. RR and ECT are the standards, and classic texts. They don't become classics if they're not excellent! CC will be a classic, and is the new standard. It doesn't necessarily replace or make the others obsolete, just introduces some new material.

Royal Road was my Erdnase (and was for Paul Wilson, as he often says). And I can remember the wonderful times with Expert Card Technique. After 48 years in magic, I still have a lot to learn from both books.
