I have recently become interested in tricks with variable endings. I haven't learned on in a long time, any suggestions?
By split ending I mean there comes a point where you if/else in the trick. To be clear I mean you check some quality of result from the trick and if it is one thing you have one finish and if it is another way it ends differently. Is there a good name for this? What are your favourites? M |

Do you mean like a totally different EFFECT or just METHOD? One common if/else scenario is to practice the classic force. If you nail it, do your 1st effect, else do some other revelation. This example the effect changes. Another idea is for instance an estimation effect. The prediction card is layed out, and the spec reveals their sighted/though of card. If you were right, blammo, miracle. Else, another METHOD will need to be implemented to reveal your prediction to be correct. These are commonly referred to as outs..

I don't know I totally understood what you were saying. Could you clarify it for us? If you mean having different "Outs" as back up plans, you could come up with your own if you know a lot of slight of hand. Some times I use a short trick as an out to the end of trick that got messed up. Just find some effects that use a card that the spectator knows that you know. Then if you fail to find their card in the first trick you can ask them what it was, find it, and then do that effect.
There are many mentalism tricks that have multiple "outs" as the main method for the effect. Lincoln

I can think of names to call it but the Webster police might come snatching me. My magic buddies and I call it "jazz" because its never really played the same way. Its not an "out" but just alternative endings, used depending on the audience reaction and behaviour during the proceeding. Most of the time this happens early on. After they have accustomed themselves with your personality you basically feel the same and would have scanned them by then.
I also use alternative endings when a magician is present and I just want to do something extra special. Another is if there is a repeat spec that talks too much, like..." watch this, watch this... its gonna come out from his mouth! etc etc. Great post M! Rannie

Thanks all,
It is different effects or even changes in patter I am looking for. Having outs is nice and I have a few, but Jazz is a good way to express it. I am sure I could invent my own but, thought I might ask here for a known trick of this type before I start. Nice use Rannie. that's exactly what I am after. I perform a lot for the same crowd, constantly cheering them up, so new material is vital. The value for time spent is partly what I like about these tricks, but I am also a programmer and there is something I appreciate about this sort of trick in that respect (I suppose if you don't program, that doesn't make much sense, oh well). As a seperate track, I am sure you all have been asked to repeat something before, and used a different technique to repeat, thus making a repeater out of something that wasn't. For example I know two Triumphs, (actually one is called drunkman shuffle but it is the same effect with a different technique and name). Have any favourites in this regard? M |

No matter what most magicians say about the ACR it is still one of the most enjoyable tricks to perform.
I have studied every book and video I could get my hands on, so that I can have a reliable arsenal to make the card rise to the top, or sink to the bottom. In the process I also created a few moves myself. Together with that, I have combined patter ideas that would support the moves. The more "reserve" moves you know the more side roads you can make depending on the traffic. I also love doing variations of Out of This World. Variations that become more impossible the next time around. Any signed card effects that use the Mercury fold have many possibilities. It could be revealed from your mouth, shoe, wine glass etc... Man I could go on and on. This is where it becomes magical, even for myself Enjoy! Rannie

Galaxy does this. you either get it perfect then there is more of a suprise element in the revealing, or you do the "experiment" before the finale
ask harry why he dont want people to know he makes $200 a month for all these ads! thats like $4000 a month! oh but SHHH! harry isnt a real person!

There are many reasons why you might want a multiple ending.
1) An effect requires a different ending depending on a spectator's free choice. E.g. vanished and gone. 2) The meals arrive and you have to cut the chase. 3) A spectator offers a perfect opening into a certain effect. e.g. During an ACR they say "you must have signed cards all over your body" and you launch into some 'to pocket' 4) Your girlfriend/wife/parents/dog tell to just get on with the *** trick. 5) You stuff up. e.g. "What card did you pick? That's weird because before we began I turned one card face down in this roughed deck..." The main problem with doing these things is that it requires you to know your art well. Unlike with musical jazz where the occasional failed piece of impro is forgiven or even goes unnoticed, in magic failure is not an option! |

I like to muck about with other magicians in improv contests...this is the ONLY place it is fogiven, and still not very. I am not great, but I have a good memory and people skills and that makes the time misdirection fun. They may know how I am doing bits of the improv but can't get the combos together. Thanks for the trick list. M |

Mike Close's Lie Dectector trick has what you're looking for. The outcome depends on choices the spectator makes choosing certain words, which are spelled using a card for each letter. He arrives at the correct card but there is a surprise ending that I will not reveal here.

Thanks all. There's some good material here to keep me going for ages. I will look around and come back in few months when I have learned them all! I certainly like use these tricks as repeaters and the different endings often make something a repeater by nature...
Rannie...I too love these progressions (who wouldn't). I have just taught a friend a simple Triumph...then I use Triumph and stump him since he gets confused thinking I am using the same technique...once he master the next I will upstage him again with Emerge Triumphant....don't worry he's not a professional it will be at a party with friends...
