I just had a freaking awesome idea for an absolute killer closer. I've never done something like this so does anyone know of a practical way to manipulate a deck of cards, then make it appear as if its never been taken out of its plastic seal? All the prep work would be done prior to the show of course.
The long and short of it is I want to peel off the plastic seal from a deck and do something like make the spectators chosen card appear on top of the "unopened deck". Any thoughts? |

There is a marketed effect which allows you to open a deck, tamper with it however you want like placing a red card in a blue deck, and then reseal the whole the thing so it seems as if it has never been taken out of the plastic. I can't remeber the name right now, but it is a common dealer item, and can be found at most shops. I hope this helps, and if I remember the name, I'll get that to you. Good luck.

I've done this before, it doesn't take too much work. I usually reverse a card in the deck, seal it up, then force the card in another deck. Start by slicing open the cellophane at the bottom of the deck (it is less likely to be notced down there) Do this as neatly as possible. Then slide the deck out of the cellophane. Rather than trying to peel and re-stick the sticker, I open the box up from the side. This worked best for me with a thin-bladed knife, like an exacto. Remove the cards and do the dirty work. Then put them back in the box, reseal the side with elmer's glue and let it set under some decent pressure, so it sticks very tightly. Slide the box back into the cellophane gently, and reseal the cellophane at the bottom with a small bit of clear tape or glue that dries clear. After you've tried this a couple times it'll get easier and you'll find little techniques that work for you.

For the tape I suggest 3M magic tape. Its almost invisible if you are after details. Nobody really bothers to check the bottom anyway.

The only thing that I would add to what mercury said is to take the deck of cards and place it over some steam to loosen the adhesive so it can peel back easily. When you get good at this, you can also use this technique to loosen the seal sticker. When you're finshed doctoring up your cards etc. use a touch of crazy glue to seal the bottom plastic cellophane together.

What is the name of the marketed version?
Is this a better method? Does it require gaffs?... Owen |

I've been using this for years.
Doc is right on in using the super glue to close the cellophane. It dries clear and their is nothing to see. As for the box, any type of glue that dries clear (Elmers; glue stick; whatever) works. Here is the more important issue: opening the bottom of the box so that it doesn't look like there has been anything done to it. All I can say is just work with a small knife and peel away slowly. Owen, don't waste time with a "marketed" version of something like this. It's such an easy thing to do yourself, put that money toward something that can't be easily made. By doing it yourself, you aren't "copying" a marketed deal. This idea has been around for years. Rick

Great tip about the superglue. I've always done it with a smear of magician's wax. The key to this subterfuge is being careful and accurate. Do it like it means something. Don't just chop it open and tape it shut. If you want people to really believe the miracle, do it right. Be a perfectionist.

Geroge Schindler "Showbiz Services" (his ads are everywhere) marketed "Sealed Surprise" where a signed card from one deck is found in a sealed deck of another color.
It is soooo goooood.... and sooooo SIMPLE ... you don't need no glue, no nuttin' as they say you JUST DO IT. You must tell him I sent you.

That is a very good effect Pete. I had kind of forgotten about it too, untill a certain performer did it on a t.v. special and I rememberd buying it back in the 80's.
I don't do the effect even tho I love it. I would rather let people see the performer on the special do it. |

I realize this doesn't meet the conditions of the original post but I would like to share it anyway.
I like to use a bluff method for tampering with a deck yet it still appearing sealed. Use the string to open the top of the cards. Do your thing with the cards. Then take the plastic off the case, flip it around and place it over the top. You are now set to bring the deck out. Holding it from the bottom (hiding the already open part) you can now peel open the plastic flaps on the top of the card case. Quickly bluff breaking the seal with you thumb again and you are all set. I believe this to be a nice subtlety when utilizing a memorized deck. Don't forget to leave the junk cards in so you can remove them later and do a few full deck false shuffles. One final note, it can be a bit tricky to put the plastic case back on reversed. I find it easier to lay the plastic flat on the table and then squeeze the box in. It takes a bit to get the knack for it but once you get it it is very fast and simple.

You may find it easier to open the deck where the plastic is folded at the base, then slide the box out, do want you need to do, then insert it back into the case. You can stick the plastic back as it was with a little tape, the spectator will naturally open the deck via the thin red tape at the top. very simple but much easier than getting involved with cutting etc.

I know that certain dealers sell the plastic seals as well as the stickers. Maybe if you contaced US Playing Card Company they would be able to help you out?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I bought a few decks and tried some things yesterday. I used super glue... yeah that was a mistake, it soaked right through the flaps on the cardbox and seeped into the bottom of the cards. So I wont use that again, I believe Elmers should do the trick to reseal the box. Also, the clear tape is great! it just looks like part of the plastic seal. I already blew someone away with my effect.
Thanks. |

Crash I'm glad that the clear tape worked for you. Four people explained to you what you have to do but they also said that you have to practice it. Practice means practice everything not just doing one thing. You squeezed out too much glue on the cellophane and it went through and you just gave up just like that and went to Scotch Tape.
Rannie you were right and I was wrong, please forgive me. Keep up the good work. Thanks Your Friend Doc |

I'm not trying to start a bashing post but why not let him use the clear tape. If it worked for him and is faster than crazy glue, why not use it? I'm sure that you are correct in the fact that crazy gluing the cellopfane will look much more realistic. However, why not let the spectators judge. If they belive that the deck is sealed then why go to the troubles of gluing and drying when one can just stick on a piece of tape. I would however recommend using crazy glue when you know that you will be performing for a heckler, so that the cellophane can be examined. But in my opinion using tape for regular performances is fine.
Just my 2 cents.

First of all, the glue I used is designed to soak through paper which is why it seeped through the cardboard... as I explained I used the wrong kind of glue.
Secondly, I said in its stead in the future I will just use regular Elmers to seal the box because I think the glue is the right way to go. Thirdly, the magic tape works great on the outside of the plastic not on the cardbox. |
