I like that plumber analogy. The move my friend showed me was a control where you reverse spread the cards and then control it to the top, not exactly sure what the name of it was.
I think it's based on who you like to do your tricks for. If you like preforming mostly for laymen then you don't really need to get into the hardcore knuckle-busters, the simples ones will suffice. Showing a layman the "Ambitious Card" with a bent card will probably get you as good as a reaction as doing "Raise Rise" except "Raise Rise" doesn't require you to lock yourself away in a room for 5 months practicing. If you were to show a magician the Ambitious Card with the bent card they probably say something along the lines of "Hey, thats neat." But show them Raise Raise and watch the jaws drop. A funny story. At that same convention my friend was at they saw Verra (The Cello-phane guy) doing a few tricks. In the middle of one of his tricks he did a perfect table faro. All the magicans were like . And all the laymen were staring at each other asking "What? Whats going on? What happened?" So i guess in the end its more of a show-off thing. It's fun to show-off. |

How do you make an effect grander using sleights? Well, interesting question, the thing is, with sleights you can do things that no one can 'see'...and thus, when no one can see you do something, you can make almost anything happen, whether it be steal a card and load it into your pocket, or you could make a card appear in a sealed envalope. Some of the greatest card tricks I know use a few sleights, like the Ambitious card routine, take a look at Daryl's video and see how many sleights he teaches. When i say 'grander', i mean, more impossible to the layman, make them say, "How'd he get the card THERE!" Ya know? As far as I know, I do not know any sleight-less magic trick that can accomplish making a card appear in a place that no one thought it would be at - if you know any, please let me know, as it would be interesting to learn. True, the principle of a sleight-less magic trick CAN spawn a few other effects, but how much? Even you admit that a sleight can spawn other tricks as well - but in my opinion, a sleight is more versatile when inventing new effects, where as a sleight-less principle can only spawn a limited amount of effects, i.e. spelling effects or mathematical effects [i.e. the classic 9 principle] This is just my opinion, I'm not saying sleight-less magic is hopeless, in fact I was close to buying Fulve's book, if sleight-less magic DOES get better and more advanced, you can count on me to check it out.
