I use Appearing Sword by Michael P. Lair, I use it in my stage shows, it's quite good and east to use, collapse to abt 10 inches.
The design is oriental style. Hope that helps |

I'm not sure because I don't do sword swallowing and this sword is use originally for appearing. Palm it and appear it.

I offer these swords at my website: http://www.lairmagic.com.
I will ship them anywhere. They are made of solid metal, look great, and can be made to appear or disappear. There are sword swallowers using them! |

Believe it or not, I bought my swords at a Chinatown trinket shop. They collapse to about 10 inches (which is basically the handle) and work extremely smoothly for sword swallowing. They cost about $20 CDN or $15 USD. They have a nice oriental design with a tassel on the handle and a carry bag as well.

They are usually used for Tai Chi. Easier to carry to the park. and lighter that the wooden ones.
At least that's what people here use them for. Cheers, James

Any good methods for production?

I discovered that I can simulate sword swallowing with the sword from my sword through neck set. It looks convincing, but I haven't decided whether I should perform it or not. It could be a nice addition to the sword through neck sequence for the right audience.
Has anyone tried this? Oliver |

The ones that Michael Lair sells are great. I own two and use them all the time.

I have since heard from several Side-Show performers, they really don't like people faking sword swallowing. So I'll leave the side-show stunts to the guys who have spent the time learning to do the real thing.

I just spent AU$120 on an appearing sword from a magic shop, only to find that they retail at less than half than that from a martial arts supplies shop... as a telescopic practice tai chi sword. Oh well! I had hoped to include it in my show at a contract in a Taiwanese theme park later this year. Does anybody who lives in this region know if this prop (in its martial arts form) is common knowlege to the public, and thus wll diminish its effect as a magical appearance? Thanks in advance.

I use the very cheap, but effective " Amazing Sword Swallowing Feat" from India. It takes a bit of practise to look convincing, but also can be played for comedy, giving the game away at the end as Tommy Cooper did. I don't see the problem with faking such a stunt, entertainers are there to entertain folks, and magicians have always found ways to accomplish incredible feats with simple methods. According to Dunninger, the "proper" way to swallow a red-hot sword is to first swallow a scabbard before you come on stage. I wonder if anyone ever tried that for real?

Whoton,
Most martial artists I know are very aware of the swords although I practice Chinese martial arts so that is probably why. I use mine when I am travelling and want to practice my sword forms so I can stick it in my rucksack. I certainly would not use mine for an effect but that is just my choice, outside of martial arts they are not exactly common knowledge. Bri |

I'm glad I stumbled across this post. I was just about to buy the Lair sword, but after reading here I've done some searching and found very similar swords for half that price at Tai Chi stores here in the UK, which also saves on the import tax.
Video here: http://shop.ensomartialarts.com/telescop......u/dp/995 It looks quite convincing to me! |

I use the slap bracelet type for a gag.
The one with the Maroon handle. So I decided to upgrade to one of those fancy ones with the Red Tassel. And when I use it I cut the inside of my mouth because of bad quality control I guess. So beware If you Purchase one of these. Just saying.
