Just last week I flashed 7 balls. I have been juggling for a while now and know about numbers juggling. I am going into 10th grade and do lots of juggling art fairs and that sort of thing. what I am wondering is will 7 balls REALLY impress anyone? Should I spend the majority of my time practicing numbers or tricks? Anybody who does any juggling for people who cannot juggle, (street preformers) your oppinion is verry important to me.

If you tell people you juggle, they'll laugh at you, if you tell them there is a juggling magazine. that laugh more, if you tell them that juggling is an art, they'll laugh you out of the room. If you punch them in the face, they'll stop laughing! Jason G

Seven-ball juggling sure impresses me! For many non-jugglers, though, anything over four or five balls is just seen as "lots and lots." Thrilling patterns and tricks tend to have more impact than just how many items can be kept in the air at one time.
Keep up the good work, and be sure that you are also developing a good presentation along with your amazing technical ability. |

Congratulations on flashing 7!
I think that juggling 7 balls is impressive to both jugglers and non-jugglers, as I believe both recognize that they are witnessing a difficult feat. Non-jugglers probably don't realize just how difficult, but they know it is something that is at least pretty darn hard. It is impressive, but is it entertaining? Is it more entertaining than a very cleanly executed Mills Mess? How about a string of 3 ball tricks that flow together seamlessly, providing an ever-changing kaleidoscope of interesting patterns? Or how about an excellent performance where the juggler is more interesting than his tricks? The most memorable and well-received juggling performances I've seen combine skill and entertainment, with a strong focus on the entertainment. In fact, one of the most enjoyable juggling performances I remember actually had very little juggling! Is 7 worth the effort? From an entertainment perspective, I think that a solid routine that engages the spectators is far more important than how many balls you can keep going at one time. As Avrakdavra mentioned, anything more than 5 balls probably looks about the same to most non-jugglers anyway. Here are some links to previous UseNet discussions in rec.juggling that you might find relevant - http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&am......87c813f5 http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&am......54c8635b http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&am......5494fc45 |

Congratulations and keep at it!
Avrakdavra and rden both make very good points; five and above is hard for anybody to keep track of and a three (or even two!) ball toss routine can be beautiful. That said, running seven certainly won't hurt your juggling career. Just find the right context in your routine for it and you'll impress them all (certainly other jugglers like me, stuck at pitifully low runs of five). I'd say practice both tricks and numbers as much as you can and maybe try to find someone else who can juggle as well as you do...think of the passing possibilities! That would be impressive *and* entertaining. |

I'd say give it a try - sooner or later your body/psyche will let you know the correct answer for you.
I think the challenges of numbers is more akin to the challenges you face with long distance running, maybe martial arts?, maybe golf/tennis? etc. etc...than anything related to providing entertainment to an audience. Numbers is a journey where you make incremental progress but never arrive. And much more a solitary pursuit than tricks/patterns. Tricks with lower numbers and different patterns lend themselves more to witty remarks and situation comedy (mainstream entertainment). |

Once you get down the 7, you might want to do 9 (Nine!) for the people...of course it's a gag (3 sets of three balls attached) but I used to get good laffs out of it in my clown guise. Looks like a BIG pile of balls in your cupped hands before they hit the air.

7 balls. Well done. I am still a beginner at three! I can't imagine doing 7.

My experience is that nobody really cares what you do...it's how you do it. On the street, people don't give you a dollar because you can juggle 7, they give you a dollar because they like you. 7 is good (IMO) for a vegas spectacle act, not worthwhile the practice for the street.
I have seen an IJA Silver Medalist juggle 5 torch backcrosses, catching the last one in the crook of his leg, to muted and subdued applause. Why? My guess is he didn't connect with the audience. Nobody felt great about him or themselves. His skill wouldn't compensate for that fact. Juggle 7 balls for your personal satisfaction. But be careful not to sacrafice good style, technique, and repetiore with 3, 4 and 5 balls. There is probably loads more performing material there! -P

I just attended the IJA convention in Buffallo I can't believe how many jugglers are doing 7 balls, rings and clubs!
I still like a performer that makes me feel something! Laughter, sadness, fear then relief. I tend to like comedy juggling big surprise huh! Then there are the teenagers that won teams they joke about them being geniticaly cloned. They pass 14 clubs on their DVD. If you keep working on 7 it will make your 5 ball pattern better, there are a lot of folks doing amazing patterns with 5 now too. Best of Luck!

Well done!! I only recently cracked four balls so keep up the good work. A friend of mine does seven and very well he does it too! in his stage show he only goes as far as five, he starts from three and builds up with a fantastic routine all choreographed then finsihes the ball section of his show with five balls a net and a small child trying to catch them. its really funny (depending on the kid you get!) he keeps the seven ball juggling as a personal challenge. even with five balls I heard people after his show talking to their friends remark 'did you see that guy he was juggling about ten balls!' the audience just see a flurry of balls and guess as to how many there are! he doesn't mention the number in his act , he just says I gonna juggle some balls and you have to catch them! so if you can work out an interesting presentation for seven balls then go for it!
Keep passing the open windows!

FlowJuggler, That whole leg catch thing, was that Nizer? it sounds like something he would do, but he usually conects really well with the crowds.

I believe that no matter how many balls you juggle, just don't drop it.
If you drop any of the balls, both layman and jugglers will not be very impressed, whether you juggle 3 balls, 5 balls, 7 balls or 10 balls. :> So, just like what magician will say, do the amount you are most comfortable with. |

Dear jugglingeagle
Seven balls is extrodinary, and can only be mastered by the young. Nine balls is near impossible but if you get it you are ready for the IJA numbers competition. The down side of numbers juggling is it is boring to watch. Get a copy of "juggling from start to star" to learn some tricks an audience can apreciate, with your hand eye coordination it should be a snap. U DA MAN Al Angello There is another good book on how to be a performeing juggler it is "juggling with finness" by Kit Summers which covers how to take your skill and convert it to an art, and there is usually one up on ebay for cheap, or you can google Kit Summers himself. The David Finnigan, and Kit Summers books are how I got most of my chops. Good luck Al Angello

The comments on being entertaining are appropriate, but 7 balls is technically very impressive! Nice job!

Just to set the record streight. Anthony Gatto is the best juggler in the world he does 7 clubs in his Vegas act (when serious jugglers get together he is only refered to as Anthony, as if there was only one Anthony), I have never seen anyone hold 8 clubs let alone juggle 8 clubs.
Some people have flashed 9 balls but, 9 balls have never been successfully juggled. My friend Amazing Larry Vaxman does 8 balls on a pogo stick, and he is in the Guinness book. Anthony Gatto, and Sergi Ignotov have flashed 11 rings, but no one has ever successfully juggled 11 rings. These records probibly will never be beaten because they push the envelope of the laws of physics, so mister jugglingeagle after you master nine balls the people at Guiness want to talk to you. I SINCERELY WISH YOU SUCCESS Al Angello

9 balls have been successfully juggled by many people. Go http://www.bogleg.com
Over 50 people claim to have made over 18 catches of 9. Gatto has done over 300 catches according to this site. This is the unofficial records site, but no way could that many people lie? |

I'm an old man, and the memory is the second thing you loose. To be honest with you no one has ever done 9 balls in my presence.

With all the accomplished magicians in this forum I generally ask more questions than I answer, so here a chance to share some of my "expertise".....I posted a couple 7 ball toss/bounce videos at link below.
I will confirm that this 7 ball undertaking is not easy (years not months). The road to bouncing 7 is far shorter than tossing. I will also confirm that it gives me daily satisfactions even on those days that I'm grumpy about everything. -Mich http://www24.brinkster.com/michb/videos/ |

Hey congrats on the 7 balls!!! I'd say that 7 is fast becoming a must for anyone who juggles professionally. I'd work on getting the 7 real solid then have a bash at learning to kick up from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 then finish with 7. You can stick in some nice visual 3, 4 and 5 ball tricks in the middle too if you're feeling a little frisky.
I used to do this but in reverse. Starting at 7 and working down to 3. As the number of balls decreased the difficulty (as far as the audience is concerned) increased. Each time I'd go down a ball I'd throw it over my head into a net I had hanging behind me. The finish by flashing the final 3 over my head which would land (most of the time) in the net too. Of course you could start with 3 and work up, then work your way back down again as above. Hope this helps,
