My mistake - - - the box!
Yes, there are several vanishing decks (Don England's "Folds Flat for Packing," several transpostions ("Houdini and Bess") and several clean "mystery card" (aka "Money Card") effects as well as color changing card case ideas (Simon Aronson / Mike Powers) that are worth exploring. |

Roy Walton has a number of excellent routines you may want to check out using the card box.
Ray Kosby has an excellent one called "ack in the box" aswell. You show a jack ontop of a closed empty cardbox, you give the jack a flick and it disapears only to end up inside the closed cardbox.. It's very nice |

oh, i do.
yes, i have my own version of card-to-cardbox. i use it for the magician in trouble syndrome. i give the spectator the deck and tell him he WILL cut to his selection. it doesn't work and his selection ends up in the box. oops. my mistake for the box itself the one i do uses a gimmicked box that you make yourself (sorry) but it's worth it... i'm pasting this old post in here that i wrote in alt.magic PASTE START Five times Five Japan (kaufman) has some fantastic things you can do with card boxes to help do deck to box or appearing deck. I sometimes open a set with the effect "Appearing Deck" where you display just the front of a box (flat, everything else has been cut off except for the front, the flap and one extra side). after showing front and back of this flat piece of cardboard, you turn it over and a whole deck falls out. it is a great visual illusion. I tell the spectators that the flat piece was given to me by my wife. She wanted to frame it to comemorate my first magic show. I show it around. Then i take it and hold it up in the air or by a wall, if i'm near one asking what they think of the idea. Then I tell them i didn't like the idea because "I'm a magician. I can still use these cards". I pull out a whole deck and proceed to do a flourish or 2 and then a card trick. I think it's a much better way IF you're going to open with a card trick (which i try not to do) than just "hey, pick a card". this effect takes 3 boxes in total. it's easy, just 3 boxes scissors and glue. there's a second effect in the book by a different magician but i don't remember how many boxes it takes to make (and i don't use it). you can also do a color changing deck if you have a blue deck in a red box, or whatever that packet trick is... um... i forget. oh, yeah, "stranger's gallery" needs a wrong color box. i saw michel skinner video with a trick called "coin entrapped" where he displays a quarter and dime in his hand, then xfers them to the top of a box of cards. when the spectator tries to pick up the quarter, it's under the celophaine (sp?) now, i'm bored. who else has good what to do with an extra box ideas... PASTE END

There is a booklet by Jerry Mentzer called "Cards and Cases", that has some interesting ideas.
Another cool effect can be found in Frank Garcia's Million Dollar Card Secrets, in which a selected card visibly penetrates the card case. -Uli |

I often start my card routine with a colour changing case and deck : I display a red card box from which I take a red deck. After riffling the cards, I hold a blue card box from which I remove a blue deck.
I found this idea in a very old Linking Ring issue and I forgot creator of the idea. Despite the work on making the gaff, this has been my favourite opener for many years. |

Greg Wilson's Heavyweight championship trick is a great way to start a show. My favorite as far as box stuff is concerned

There's an Ed Marlo trick that is excellent which goes a little something like this. You pull out a red deck open it and pull out a blue backed deck, you set the box down and spread the cards out, then you pick up the box and pull out ANOTHER deck of cards but these ones are red, then the card box shrinks into a mini card box from which you pull out a mini deck of cards. It's very nice no idea what it's called tho. Or how he does it for that matter

Sankey has a neat sort of thing where you put some kinds in the card case, shut it, then the coins visually "pop out of" the case. Looks really neat, but the name of the effect is escaping me right now...
