"...the School for Scoundrels shells and pea work well on a hard surface, but are like a Mercedes on a mat..." Whit Hadyn Can't agree with that statement! I drive a Mercedes and the School for Scoundrels shells are much smoother!! Riley |

Have you thought about the tape "Absolutely Nuts" by Bob Sheets? Great stuff. One of my favourite tapes. At the moment I'm making some new close-up pads. Ruined the last set I had by driving over them Riley PS Looking forward to the School for Scoundrels DVD on the shell game. |

Unlike Erdnase who wrote in his book expert at the card table - that the reason for writing and publishing the book was because Erdnase needed the money. The extra money was great and I have sent both DVD's all over the world. And I have had only great reviews from them. But the reason is that they did what I wanted them to do. I produced them to get my name out there and take credit for some of the effects I have done. Like the shellgame and Glenn Bishop Cuts the aces. I wanted credit for the ideas. I gave more away to people than I sold at the Magic Castle! I did not want to have my ideas taken like it happened with my Fathers rope tie. But things worked out with them very well because it was the card DVD that I sent to Ron Wilson and that helped me get booked at the Magic Castle. You could not get a better climax to a DVD project than that. As of right now they are now off the market and because I do not like or want to be in the mail order business. They may never go back on the market! Thanks again for the kind words Pete!

That is a shame, Glen. I think they are all great contributions to the art. Really great stuff. I know how you feel about getting the proper credit for your stuff.
Publishing the real stuff is always a two-edged sword. It is the only way to preserve provenance, but it also lets your children wander out into the world. I hope that you will want to put some of your wonderful routine on the shell game in our upcoming dvd on the shell game. Your work belongs where it will be remembered in the real history of the game. It was great seeing you at the Castle. All the best. Whit |

One of the things that has helped me is having a magician friend watch. When I was first working on the three shell game a buddy of mine helped me by watching me perform the routine. He had been doing the routine for much longer than I had. His advice helped alot. Also performing for real people always helps once you've gotten enough practice and rehearsal in. Real people as in strangers as opposed to people within your immediate circle.

Creative shopping in a hardware store is a true magician's skill. Try going into a hardware store with John Cornelius sometime. He can walk from the front door to the counter and invent 5 tricks before he gets his wallet out of his pocket.

See if you can get a hold of Karl Norman's new DVD which is distributed by Meir Yedid. Its called "Karl Norman Close up table magic" it features an awsome 3 shell routine in which the pea appears in an empty shot glass at the end.

Interesting that this post is talking about a shot glass ending and it is posted right under my post.
FYI the footage of me doing the shell game at my web site was from a Television show that I did in Salt Lake City. The year was 1983... I have been doing the shell game with my glass ending longer than that. I also have done it on several TV projects including my own cable TV show. And a cable TV show that was done in 1976 called magic and much more that my Dad did. And I have the footage. I have also lectured on magic and the shell game has been a part of all lectures that I have done. And I have gone to conventions and won and lost magic contests. So the ending the way I do it is my own. I have also done this for Bill Malone and Ed Marlo in Houdini’s Pub about that time. And Bill Malone saw me do this at the Jim Ryan Ring about 1979. There are other performers that saw me do this including Jimmy Cards Molinari at Mr. C’s Magic Lounge in Berwyn IL. Lee Darrow, Danny Orleans, Bob Rath Don Weiberg perhaps they might post about it. I was well known for the shell game in Chicago and the mid west. And the ending and the way I do it is mine! Bill Goldman came into the magic shop and video taped me doing it and explaining my routine! Perhaps someone could ask him… Or someone could ask Bill Malone about it…

In the book INSIDE JOHN MURRAY, he has the pea under the shot glass ending in his shell game, I don't have it on me at the moment, but his goes way back, he also has , in my opinion, the best patter for the shell game, it is one of the best kept secrets, so don't say I told you.

John Murray's book was published in 1984. We were working on it for a couple of years (I did the illustrations) and John had been doing most of the routines for as long as I had know him. He published the basic routine without the pea under the glass ending in Jerry Mentzer's Close-Up Cavalcade Finale which has a 1977 copywright date. John had a number of shell routines. I doubt seriously that he ever saw or heard of Glenn's routine. John didn't travel around all that much, so he was mostly known in the Mid Atlantic area. He lived in Greenville, S.C. where he owned a magic store. It isn't surprising that performers have independently developed similar endings on the 3 shell game.
In the Karl Norman routine published in Nick Trost's Expert Gambling Tricks (1975), a half dollar appeared under the shot glass at the climax of the routine. However, this routine used walnut shells and not the brass "shells" that Karl normally used in the routine mentioned above. Glenn's routine is very good and very entertaining. It is short and to the point with the strong pea under glass ending. Glenn routine is his and I am sure Karl's and John's were theirs. If three strong shell workers independently developed similar moves and/or endings to their routines, it should in no way diminish the creative credit due any of them. |

I have video of me performing my ending and this routine that used to be longer at my web site. I took it down because the files were to large.
This video was a TV show that was filmed in 1975. It was local cable but the cable stations swaped video and shows with other cities. I also demoed the shell game in the Marshall Brodien Magic shop in 1975 and used it to sell the shells... And I was going to conventions at that time. I also took first place at the Houdini convention of Wis... For close up in 1976... My shell game was much talked about at that convention. I also wrote up the routine and did it as a lecture item... During those years including lectures at magic inc... By the way when I won the close up contest I was writen up by two magic mag's of the day and they wrote about my ending of the pea appearing in the shot glass. I remember talking to my Father about it and he said that now you have publised proof that it is yours... And....

Buy the book Shell Game by Tom Osbourne. It gives practice routines and 32 different routines to master. This will stop the boredom to some extent
