"I'll never forget my first real magic book "Now you see it Now you don't" by Bill Tarr... still got it on my bookshelf"
I got that as my first magic book like 4 days ago. I bought DVDs and stuff before, but that was my first book. |

Laymen do poorly at this because real magic is all in the presentation.

I am curious: How do you define "layman" ? Is it "one who doesn't do magic for a living". Or do you define it like "one who isn't at the Magic Café" ? Or "one who hasn't spend hundreds of dollars on buying magic tricks"? So, what is the difference between a "layman" and a hobby magician?

I'm defining layman as someone who has no particular interest in magic from either a hobby or performance point of view.
They will generally extremely limited knowledge of sleight of hand (probably only the glide as mentioned, above if anything). Someone who has never read a book on magic or would ever even consider buying a trick but may hve been taught a trick like the one's mentioned above by, say, an uncle. I certainly wouldn't consider a hobby magician to be a layperson (perhaps as I fall in that category myself and have done for the past 20 years). The girl who performed Out of This World for me was an old flatmate of mine. She had no background at all in magic, and had never have heard of Paul Curry. |

When I do walkaround magic and somebody from the audience likes to show me a card trick I usually act interested and let him show the trick. The reason is that I think it would be very impolite to tell them that I don't like to see the trick.
They have been interested in my show and the wish to show me a trick is also a proof of their interest in watching my magic. It is my job as an entertainer to give them the best time they can get. And if I can achieve this goal by letting them do the work it's okay for me. And I would never take the cards back and show them the same effect with a different (to them unknown) method. I want them to like me and I would not like somebody who shows me that I am a fool. Ingo |

The glide is no doubt a simple sleight to learn.
When I ask people to perform card tricks for me they always start with the 21 Card Trick, followed by a locator card trick then any glide-based trick. How do they learn this stuff? hehehe... |

The glide is not easy to learn. When I first learnt it (about a year ago) I actually overlooked it because I found it too hard to do. I still use 2 or 3 glide-based tricks in my routines and will continue to do so as tehy are very good effects.

When you do something right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

Before I studied any magic and was a layperson I knew of a few tricks all taught by friends I knew of the glide but not of its name and 2 forces and several selfworking tricks.I think I could do about 5-10 tricks.I think my best was the the voodoo ash on the arm trick I still do it occasionaly now but the methods are very differnet.

Oh, wait! I forgot.
Some laymen know the "Slap Trick", also known in Penguinmagic.com as the "Hitman" trick. Seven out of 10 know it. |

I always, always, always get fabulous reactions from Daley's last trick! This is the effect that I use hands down when someone asks me to do a trick---borrowed deck, four cards, no setup, in hands transposition, no cleanup, fun patter. It never, and I mean NEVER, fails.
If you don't know this one, learn it and use it! It uses the glide. I have never been caught! It's all in the presentation! Mike |

Did you read the first post?
I often never see the 21-Card Trick anymore. Has anyone been shown the 49 card trick? Pretty much the same but 7x7. The trick I am shown the most recently is the trick where they turn the top card face up, and if it's a seven they add three more cards face down to make it 10, add six to four to make it 10, etc. They do this to make three piles. They then add up the numbers of the three face up cards together and tell me which card will be at that position from the top. It's self-working, and all you need is to know the 33rd card from the top. Try it yourself. You'll probably fall asleep yourself. |

The laymen are actually showing some very good tricks in deed. People who have no real interest in magic and have learned the tricks relatively quickly from someone else I must say I'm pretty impress. And the 21 card trick? It is a good one. Floors all of those who haven't seen it. At least it floored me and the good looking girls when we were 14 and my mate showed it to us. Nothing wrong with it as long as it is performed as a layman showing a trick rather than a magician performing a miracle.

Dynamite,
"Oh, wait! I forgot. Some laymen know the "Slap Trick", also known in Penguinmagic.com as the "Hitman" trick. Seven out of 10 know it. " AH! This is a great trick that I usually use as an opener. I've never met any lay person that knows it. After seeming to make the card vanish, I do the "Slap" part. How can seven out of 10 know it? AH! Okay, okay, stop having a panic attack. AH! Sorry, it's just a scary thought. |
