Has anyone seen / used this effect from Joe Porper? How clean is it? Is it really worth 700$???!? I mean come on! The himber ring is a pittance by comparrison! What(if anything) makes this one so much better?

First, the Himber Ring should NEVER have become a pittance compared to the Ghostly Linking Finger Rings but, as often happens in magic, everybody and their uncle started lifting it and producing it in gold PLATED versions, instead of real gold as were the original Himber Towering and Staggering.
That said, the Ghostly Linking Finger Rings IS worth the price to anyone who will really use it. I've had mine awhile now and played with working out a routine. It makes the "work" utter simplicity. In an earlier thread I said it makes the Himber Ring become, in effect, a Ghost Linking Ring (however, they do NOT work the same,) and that's pretty close to accurate. I still feel the pencil for Koran's clever ending, is a strong value of the prop. It enables you to do a "hands-off" unlink of two borrowed finger rings, both rings going right into the hands of the lenders. If that doesn't convince anyone that you've just done the impossible, I don't know what would. The only downside to this, as I said previously, and something that could have reduced the price, is the inclusion of a matching ungimmicked ring. It is completely unnecessary as the audience is never handles and is never even aware of the gimmicked ring at all. Yes, it's worth the money. |

There's already a few other threads on this topic that are worth checking out.
First off, the props are made by Joe Porper (highest quality around). Second, the ring is made the way a ring for this type of routine SHOULD have been made in the first place. It doesn't take two hands to open, unlike most other versions I've seen. Finally, if you've ever had the pleasure of seeing Bruce Cervon perform his version of the linking finger ring routine, you'll understand that he isn't joking when he says "this is the routine you'll be talking about with your friends tomorrow." I couldn't believe what I had just witnessed the first time I saw him perform his closer. I remember going home from the Castle and telling my wife that I just saw one of the best tricks I had ever seen. Without going into any details, the precision pen that is part of the the set is truly an ingenious piece of work which allows you to create one of the greatest moments of astonishment around. I couldn't believe my eyes when, a while back, I read a post by Pete Biro saying that this set would soon be available. Are there cheaper ways to perform a "good" linking finger ring routine? Yes. But if you're looking for the BEST apparatus available and a routine that's absolutely mindboggling, this is it. |

I promised a complete, unbiased report on the Porper/Biro Ghostly Linking Finger Rings, and this is it.
I got the first set that Joe Steves sent out. Here's what you get: 1 Ghostly Linking Finger Ring 1 Matching Ungimmicked Ring 1 Special Pencil to do some nifty things with 1 Case that holds all of it 1 Set of instructions -- profusely illustrated, with photos. Let's start with the instructions. If you buy this ring, be sure you read the instructions first. If you don't, you won't understand what is happening with the ring. There are photographs that cover every aspect of the basic routine, including the open unlinking of two totally ungaffed, borrowed finger rings. The special pencil does this for you. It's a real dandy. This, itself, is one of the things that makes this an expensive prop. But it's crucial to the "sell" of the routine. This item is based on a thing that Al Koran developed and used. Now, for the rings, themselves. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have owned many different versions of the Linking Finger Rings, including one that hasn't really been marketed yet. Of all the marketed rings, I firmly believe this set is the best and most practical. The cheap linking finger rings you have seen on most web sites are not very good. They certainly are not the equivalent of the genuine Himber/Diaconis/Schneider rings. I have owned one of each of the H/D/S rings, so I am speaking from experience here. These new rings beat them all to pieces. I also own some other rings that you may have seen advertised. I'm not going to comment on their quality. They work, but in the case of one of them, there is an immanent danger that it could pop apart if roughly handled by an audience member. I don't think this will happen with the new Porper/Biro rings. Now, let's get down to the heart of the matter. First, the quality. These are excellent, well-made rings. Second, the handling. The new design makes them much easier to handle than the old H/D/S rings. The gaffus opens wide enough to do the job. The borrowed rings will go where they need to go, and then the gaffus snaps back into place and locks. Operation is totally one-handed. They will take a bit of getting used to. Any new prop does. And the special pencil will take some practice to work correctly. Just do it. And get the video that Pete recommends in the instructions. You really need it to understand what to do with the rings. No, they aren't gold. They are gold-plated brass. HEAVY gold-plated brass. But I feel that they are worth the price. They look pretty much like a regular wedding band, so you should have no trouble finding what you need in any audience to do the routine. I don't want to get any more specific than this. I don't want to give away the store. But I'll say what I said before, this time from a position of solid information. If you are a working pro, this is a great addition to your act. It is definitely worth the money. If not, leave it alone, unless you are a collector. There simply won't be enough of these to go around, otherwise.

What can I say, but "Thanks much for your reports." We (Porper and I) are very very proud of this item. It was in my mind for years, but I didn't know anyone that had the skills to make something of this high quality.
Koran gave me the OK on the pencil over 20 years ago. I never made one, but told Bruce Cervon about it and he had his father in law fabricate the one he uses. He has been "knocking audiences for a loop" with the finish, and I felt a bit reluctant to release the pencil, but in concert with the new ring design felt it was time. I told Bruce about my plan to release it before I went ahead with the work, as I didn't want him to hear it second hand. Again, thanks to those that have purchased this item, you will find it will KO your audiences, for sure.

I received my set today, I can tell you this is
the finest set I have seen. The booklet, routine and props are all first class. The rings looks great, very natural looking, this was important to me. I was never happy with the standard Himbers that have been on the market through the years. Are far as craftsmanship, two words, Joe Porper. Mr. Biros concept for the ring is going to make the lucky few who have these sets, work a whole lot smoother and effective. Personally, I have waited a long time for a set of this quality. I have to agree with (runawayjag) , the Koran pen turns this whole affair into a mind blowing sequence, that will surely get that jaw-dropping reaction from an audience. For me worth the price of admission. If you work professionally this is a killer set, that will pay for itself. This is the type of effect that gets you continued bookings. Its it worth it? You bet it is! |

Mr. Palmer,
Thank you again for your well thought out and extensive review as always. It was very helpful. I am waiting for my rings to be shipped by Steven's magic and I hope to receive them soon so that we can share some more thoughts on this item. Best regards, MI

Mr. Bill Palmer,
Would you use the new Porper linking rings over the other solid 14k rings that are available through Steven's magic and other dealers? Will the Porper ring replace the "typical" solid 14k gold custom made linking ring? Best regards, MI

You can use either type of ring. However, our new ring design works one-handed, is far easier to use and looks more like a normal man's wedding band.
In addition, this comes with a device (a mechanical pencil) that, when you are down to the last two rings, both ungimmicked borrowed rings, that appear to still be linked, will visibly unlink, one ring dropping into the spectator's hand. You are left totally clean. If this was NOT a major improvement over the Himber design we would not have invested the thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of prototype work to bring this to market.

I recieved my Ghost Ring set but NO booklet or instructions. I will be calling Joe Porper to see what happened. I will reserve final judgement until I see how this is designed to be used. I think the gimmick is slightly more visible than other versions I have seen, but hope the handling instructions deal with the issues.
I also ordered and recieved a Porper Card Clip and Dye Tube, all in all Joe makes some fine props and gimmicks.
