Wow, maybe this answers my question. Just watched a Patrick Page DVD "25 Super Tricks and Funny Business for Kids' Shows" and he does a nice routine with the break away wand. I couldn't figure out how he got that gimmick back on/off so easily (without losing it forever). What you guys are saying is just use your fingers!

My first breakaway wand was purchased in the EARLY '50S. Connie Haden made it, It was plastic, not wood, and was precision made.

I finally WORE IT OUT--after a gazillion shows. I've since had several, all worked well, but Connie's was the best. The first thing to do is to throw away the extra piece. Mattisdx may be a nice fellow, but he "aint been around long enough!"

For more years than I care to count,I do/did a routine with a straight wand, a breakaway wand, a .22cal shooting wand (made by Alexander & Bonner, and a breakaway fan.

(I now have from old pal, the late Roy Mayer, a .32 cal wand made by a St. Louis MO magician. I'll think of his name in a minute. He only made a few .32s, and you can buy mine after I've made my final exit.

The routine can run up to 5 minutes, and in Junior & Senior High Schools, it KILLS. The biz with the 'straight' wand gets some nice chuckles, the breakaway gets three laughs--each one bigger than the last. The shooting wand gets a SHOW STOP LAUGH. The fan gets a half dozen good laughs, followed by a show stop laugh, and then applause. On two occasions in Senior High Schools, the fan got me a STANDING OVATION.

Old circus clowns (and I've been one)know about the principle of COMEDY THREE. That's ONE of the 'secrets' with the breakaway wand (and fan). There are several other 'secrets'. I'm going to write up the whole routine in the book.

Breakaway wand OBSOLETE!!????? The "b" wand was a staple in Karrell Fox's club act. (and his kid show, too.) Karrell got a hernia from going to the bank with the money.

Thanks, Bill Palmer for your well chosen words.

Vernet Magic makes the best break-away wand. It is solid and they give you what you need to repair the wand in case it breaks although that has never happened to me. It's definitely worth the extra cost compared to the other versions on the market.

Wands including the breakaway wand kills in all my shows. Great thing about doing family and children shows is that parents keep making new kids for my shows. Most kids have never seen the breakaway wand or snake wand or silly wand. Even if they have- big deal. Kids will watch the same video over and over again (I've got kids and probably have watched the little mermaid 100 times ) so even of they are familiar with the trick- they will still enjoy the effect or routine is done correctly.

Ha! this 81 year old brain still works! --maybe a bit slowly, but it does work.

The man from St. Louis, MO area who made the.32 cal. shooting wand, mentioned above, was FRED CATILLER. He only made a few. DALE LORZO has one, and I have one. We aint selling!

As mentioned above in this thread, I've decided to write up the complete "WANDS & FAN ROUTINE" IN "THE" BOOK.

I'll include the "squirting water from the kid's ear", the WELLER WIENERS and the RUBBER CHICKEN from the kid's shirt--and WHY such bits of business are no longer a "good idea".
