I have heard about a book where it teaches you how to make illusions out of cardboard. My question is this: What kind of illusions does this book teach you to make? Also, where could I buy this book?
Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated Cole |

I'm uncertain, but I believe you're speaking of a U.F. Grant book available through Hades Publishing... some good stuff! I've used much of it with great success. I'll also point out that most of the big illusions in the Mark Wilson Course can be made from heavyweight cardboard as well.
You may also wish to look into Gary Darwin's "Inexpensive Illusions" book. Best of luck!

Cole,
Another source is "Darwin's Inexpensive Illusions" While they aren't all cardboard, they are easy and cheap to make. There are over 40 illusions described and they are all workable and practical. I highly recommend this book published in 1996 and still available at most magic dealers. Steven

I think the best cardboard illusion I have ever seen is 'The Cardboard Box' illusion (mmm... wonder how it got its name?) as performed by Shahid Malik & Lisa. I think the impact of this is amazing.

I don't know which one you mean... there's so many!
I do recall a very cool "Sword Box" thing I saw on video @ the Castle years ago... If I remember right, a girl goes into a cardboard box that sits on top of a normal table and swords are pushed through at 2" intervals throughout the entire box... something like 36 blades in all and she is really in the box the entire time... I believe the front of the box is opened to show her in the mix of blades... not certain on that though. Another thing to think about is the old Beer Barrel & Broom penetration... I think Abbott sells the plans for $5.00... it's cute and it works!

The one I'm talking about involves an ordinary cardboard box opened from flat. Lisa climbs into the box and Shahid literally 'throws' 18 (I think it's 18) wooden spikes through it. This effect can be performed anywhere and under almost any conditions.

Darmore, The Beer Barrel and Broom illusion was the very first “big” illusion I ever built. Man, oh man, do you take me back. I bought half dozen wooden canes (with the crook at one end) at a thrift store (Salvation Army) and used half dozen wooden dowels each with a different top (glass and brass doorknobs mainly bought at junk stores). The display of the canes looked nice on stage. I bought the plans from Douglas Magicland in Dallas. Man, that was 1962!
I later sold the whole thing to a circus magician for a couple of hundred dollars (maybe '65 or so). It was a good illusion! I remember Hans Morretti doing the cardboard sword box. It played much like the one you described at the Castle. However, Hans goes in tights and comes out in complete clown costume, white face and wig, with a rooster (yes, a live rooster) and playing a drum! He showed the box empty before going in. Hans in an interview said that he invented the trick and would never tip its working. I had to laugh! He had taken two tricks right out of Grants Victory Cartons booklet, (tip over box, and sword box) and added real sabers, a costume change and livestock and had a career-making miracle! Hans was a genius (maybe still is! While he has to be in his 70’s now he may still be performing! Does anyone know if he is?). By the way, PSMAGIC, The one you like was actually published in a kids (youth oriented) magic book published by a British magician. I will try to fine the reference. I may still have it. I agree wity you it is one of the best Packs flat illusions I have ever seen.

PSMAGIC, I found the reference.
The Box Illusion that you describe and like can be found in a book titled "The Magic Handbook" by Peter Eldin. It was published in 1985 by Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers. It contained some fairly advanced magic. It contains Paul Curry's "Out Of This World", The Misers Dream, basic Cups and Balls routine, a torn and restored tissue, The Professors Nightmare, Christopher’s Stretching Rope, some good coin magic, good mental magic, and of course two nice cardboard box illusions (the production of an assistant from a box and the sword box)! It also had the 8 kings stack and the Si Stebbins stack! That is only a partial listing of its contents. All in paperback format and for less than $10.00 USD. I consider this little book a best buy for general magic! A beginner armed with this little book, Harry Lorayne’s “The Magic Book”, and Mark Wilson’s “The Complete Course in Magic” has enough to build several very contemporary, competent and complete magic shows! Both for a close-up and stand-up venue! In fact, I don’t recommend that someone starting out get much more then just these three.

Thanks for your comments Mumblepeas, this book you mention does sound a little advanced for the average beginner. As for the Mark Wilson Course of Magic I couldn't agree more, this is a book that experienced magicians like ourselves can still look back to from time to time and still appreciate it.

PSMAGIC, The "Magic Handbook" is a kid’s book! It was designed for the average 15 year old! Frankly, the effects in it are more advanced than basic beginner stuff, but are clearly well within the abilities of any “average” teenager! This is not complicated sleight of hand (though some basic sleights are taught) more alone the subtlety and box type of magic.

Concerning "Darwin's Inexpensive Illusions," while the illusions ARE cheap to build, the black art setup required to use them ISN'T.
Of course, if you are comparing it to paying 5 to 10 thousand for a commercial illusion, it is still cheap by comparison, but even then, black art has a lot of logistical obstacles on the road, such as lighting, staging, fire marshall problems with the fabric, wear and tear on the fabric, DIRT, ---lol- Still, "whatever floats your boat" cheers!---- Jimo |

You'll have fire marshall concerns with any hanging set... they have to be treated and "certified" as such that goes with any set or fabric piece used in a theater. Lighting with BA can be a slight pain, but lighting any kind of show is a pain. Especially if you aren't trooping your own lights.
Fortunately black art does not require high tech advantages... remember, it originally worked with candle lanterns, no filters other than some very limited colored glass here and there, and next to no form of "trim" such as we do now. Shadow was the magician's friend in those days and the older lighting systems gave us plenty of that. DO NOT FEAR BLACK ART... it can be your best friend. Though it does require some extra work here and there... keeping the drapes and costumes clean, etc. it is an awesome advantage most of commercial magic in today's world has turned its back on, only because it's not a convenient "self-working" element. Start small and work your way up if you want to play with Blackart. Know however, it can get expensive and fast! Best of luck!

If you read French you can obtain a wonderful book by James Hodges called La Magie qui Cartonne in Europe. It has great cardboard illusions--both large and small.

That Peter Eldin book was my first magic book (at age 6). I still consider it my favorite general magic book.

Thanks so much gentlemen! I have been looking for the title of the cardboard illusions book! I have heard of a cardboard version of the "Transported Man" that we would LOVE to try.

If you like the actual book, Abbott's sells it for about 5 dollars of so. And the name - as mentioned earlier "Victory carton Illusions" But please let me remark that it is a very old photocopeid collection and the quality of the printing makesshadow on the excellent ideas. For ideas: excelent, for the quality of the book; Do not expect much.
