I have, and always will let my audience dictate what is appropriate in my show and what isn't appropriate. They are the ones I cater too, and get paid to perform for. I hear too many other magicians who come across as if they have some authoritarian power of wisdom when they are just simply egotistic narcissists. They have a very strong opinion about how others should perform, then say they don't care what others do. Ya, right. If that was true, then why come off so abrasive?
I perform mouthcoils from the mouth. I also do a routine with sponge balls from the mouth. Both get great reactions from my audience, and I have never had a complaint. I perform a variation of Robert Baxt's mouthcoil routine.

On page four, people are still talking about it being proper or not to pull mouth coils from the mouth, even if it's a few years old.

Fair enough, but I read all the posts, and decided to respond to the claims that we shouldn't be using mouth coils. A few were very adamant about it, and one person was very authoritarian about it. It's what struck a cord the most with me.

Not only was this thread started in 2004, but one of the original participants (Peter Marucci) passed away in May 2016. He's not going to respond to, or be influenced by, your counter-argument-

I just thought you might not have known that the focus had switched from the mouth-no-mouth debate to another aspect of mouthcoils. I don't believe there is a need to be defensive. You're perfectly fine responding to anything you wish. As to your comments about the original focus, it is fairly common for people with strong, differing perspectives to state said perspectives in an adamant manner. It's also quite common for those with personal experience in certain areas to state their opinions in an "authoritarian" way. Even you make your comments in an adamant, authoritarian manner. Still, feel free to reverse the direction of the thread, if you wish. It's certainly your prerogative. :o) |

I have made coils in the past and am now making a batch for a friend but frankly, unless you are wanting a specific color combination for branding or for seasonal purposes they are cheaper to buy. I'm using a dowel and rolling them and taping them at the kitchen table. I'm (just recently ) cutting mostly with a rotary cutter. Cleaning the stick'em off the cutter and scissors is hard.
I'm having trouble getting quality tissue in true colors at an affordable price. I'm currently using cheap dollar store tissue. I used to be able to buy quality tissue in true spectral colors by the quire at Wishing Well. All the Wishing Wells in this area closed years ago. I'd still like to make coils for special projects but I don't use them regularly anymore. I like that you can make them. I've never used one from the mouth. I've made my own Million Flowers too using tissue, contact paper and a two liter cola bottle. I don't use them in my act but I liked the project. I sold all of them at a magic auction after a while. I haven't seen and dark green contact paper in ages so there is another type of material no longer available at a reasonable cost. -Mary Mowder |

Years ago when I sponsored someone’s application for the local IBM Ring, I previewed his initiation act. One of his routines was tearing up a strip of paper and producing a Londono paper coil from the top of his closed fist. My suggestion to him was to tape two coils together side-by-side but one with the pull tab pointing up and one with the pull tab pointing down so he could pull colored streamers from both the top and the bottom of his fist. That got a great response from the audience.
I’ve also toyed with the idea of doing a kind of Professor Cheer’s routine with paper streamers coming out of my sleeves. As for whether doing tricks where you produce things from your mouth is a good thing in a magic act—Tom Mullica, Vito Lupo, Mr. Electric and others had popular and very successful acts doing just that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tsjCjGSdzU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj6DfKQcogY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjv-QlWwV9Y ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
