If you go to lybrary.com - or it might be easier to just Google for geniiology - there's an in-progree history of a number of effects, giving the inventor and/or first published mention and other information. Interesting & useful.

I really like what Lybrary is trying to do, but I think their website is a little incomplete. I understand that it's an ongoing project, but some of the entries are merely a year, a book, and the effect (sometimes). However, I really do enjoy looking through it! I'd recommend it to anyone with a curious mind for magic's history.
