The topic on The Far Side is one of the most popular. I was hoping it would be. So here's a competition for all you Far Side Fans out there.
Whoever posts a description of their favourite cartoon that makes me laugh or smile the most will win a prize as yet undetermined by me I'll consider those already submitted. You can post up to three different cartoon descriptions. (You can post three the same but that would be like a broken pencil..... pointless) I'll announce the winning entry on Sunday. So far, I'm winning....

One of my favo(u)rites is down below. The caption reads: "Wonderful, just wonderful. So much for instilling them with a sense of awe." I thought it was appropriate for that opening trick of an act.

If it was easy, everybody would do it, and if everybody did it, it wouldn't be magic.

I would have to say my favorite farside comic is a picture of a kid walking into "Midvale School for the Gifted".
He's trying to "push" a door that says pull. Hilarious You can see it here: http://www.dsklyar.com/farside/fs67.GIF

The Midvale School for the Gifted is my favorite too. Sometimes I find myself so deeply ensconced in thought that I trip, run into things or find myself 20 miles out of my way.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

How about the one one 'How Natural Selection Works'. With a big cat politely waiting for the debate to end, one Gazelle says to the fleeing group (paraphrased)" Oh come on there's only one of them..."
Or the Pteradactly that is swooping down on the caveman while the other caveman says ," Look out Thag, it's a..it's a... dang what do you call that?" Deerbourne |

My favorite Far Side cartoon isn't even a Far Side cartoon. It's the inspiration for the "School for the Gifted" cartoon.
Gahan Wilson, if memory serves me correctly (which it rarely does) showed us a skeleton with webs all over him (it?), dark glasses, and a tin cup. The skeleton is wearing a sign ("I am blind. Please help.") and its finger is locked in place, pressing a doorbell button. Above the button is a sign: "School for the Deaf."

Another one of my alltime favorites shows a picture of Moses in front holding his hands apart, his hair beginning to part in the middle. He's standing in front of a mirror with a caption that I believe reads "How Moses parts his hair."
Classic...that Gary Larson...sheer genious.

ONE: There's three beggars sitting by a brick wall. One of them, who just happens to be a giant bug, is talking. He says, "I used to be somebody... big executive... my own company... and then one day someone yelled, 'Hey! He's just a giant cockroach!' "
TWO: There are three cows grazing in a field... except one of them is looking up rather angrily. He says, "Hey, wait a minute! This is grass! We've been eating grass!" THREE: There is a courtroom scene, with the focus on the jury. In the back row a cow (yes, a COW) has gotten up and is screaming, "All right! All right! I confess! I did it! Yes! That's right! The cow! Ha ha ha! And I feel great!" God I love the far side... and this was a wonderful excuse to break out my two volume set of every far side cartoon ever published (plus a few that weren't!) |

I'm glad to see there are so many Far Side Fans out there. This thread, while lacking in the deep magic philosophy angle, certainly has brought several smile to my face and a laugh to my vocal chords.
Only two more days for the chance to win something as stil yet undetermined but valuable.

These would have to be my 3 picks for some of the best:
1. Cows standing on their two hind legs until cars approach. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/k......nCar.gif 2. God creating the earth in his kitchen, adding a little bit of something to keep it interesting. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/krumb/god1.gif 3. "When potato salad goes bad" http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/krumb/FarSide12.jpg |

My favourite Far Side cartoon is that of a cat stuck inside a house standing spreadeagled against the window looking outside. In the street two lorries have crashed, spilling their cargoes out onto the road. One lorry has a sign saying (something like) 'Bob's Mice' and the other lorry is 'Al's Small Flighless Birds'.
My second favourite is the one with the two spiders. One is wearing a scary mask (made out of, it would seem, a paper bag!) and is saying to the other "Did I scare you Bert?". Bert, standing next to him, has a stream of web coming from his backside... It's amazing how his cartoons can make you smile just thinking about them. I don't know of another cartoonist whose pictures are engrained on the memory for so long. Richard
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Ok, Well...it is NOT politically correct so forgive me and it was an early Farside cartoon which was never published but...ahem, here goes...
A man standing on a street corner with a tin mug full of pencils, he has a white cane and sun glasses, his sign reads... "Roses are red, violets are blue, or so they tell me because I'm blind." ...EVIL Larson!

Ichard,
I know what you mean about the images being engrained. There is something about them being a still image, yet you get a sense of it being a still from a video and you can fill in the gap of how the situation got to that point and where it is going. The fish out the fishbowl is an example. I believe their house is burning inside the bowl. That reminds me of another classic. The fat boy is standing by a fishbowl with a straw and a fish lying in a small amount of water. The caption says, "Still won't talk, eh?"

I know that technically this is my fourth and won't count, but I just had to get it out there.
One of the most memorable ones for me is where Farmer Brown walks in on the cows that are going over a poster of how to cut him up. |

Two fishermen are in a rowboat on a lake, staring in disbelief as they watch the apocolypse from afar. The city they presumably just came from is engulfed in mushroom clouds, destroying all they held dear.
Solemnly, one looks to the other and states, "I'll tell you what this means, Norm. No size restrictions, and screw the limit!" |
