Jon: I enjoyed your lecture a while back in Virginia Beach. Hope all is well.
I stand in line with everyone else with praise for Double Back. Awsome effect!. I'm surprised, though, that noone has mentioned your count/display in Freddy's Dead. I think this is a significant contribution to a time honored routine. Do you remember the process of discovery for this move? Other than talent, creativity is the most elusive thing for me, and I think this is an excellent example of creativity. I'd be interested in knowing how you arrived at this. Thanks, Steve Proescher |

Hi Steve,
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Virginia Beach. The hotel was wonderful and the restaurant served excllent food. My compliments to the chef! The No count False count is one of my favourite things to do in the lecture. I can tell that magicians are starting to nod off when the third piece of rope I bring out is even longer than the other two. When I count the ropes as three separate ropes of equal length, there is a real change of atmosphere, sometimes with laughter and sometimes applause. I vaguely remember it's origins. I was doing Professor's Nightmare with the count that I learned from Daryl's Magic Castle lecture. I wa snever really happy with the counts I had used before. Daryl's seemed the most natural About 13 or 14 years ago, there was an evening at The Magic Circle with some of the top names in British close-up magic. I wanted to do something that would fool the magicians at TMC. (A much easier feat than I first thought!) I had seen the move used for another rope routine that escapes me but I figured I could use it in the Professor's Nightmare routine. It would be a moment when magicians would be offguard because they know the whole routine anyway. I tried it out and it did fool the magicians. Some for a longer time than others. Since then, it has become one of my favourite 'moves'. However, I don't consider it a move. All I am doing is showing the ropes to people in a condition they already accept. I am not proving anything while showing them. It's fun to do and so sneaky. I like sneakyness because it works much more effectively than cleverness. I guess it is another example of playing with props and ideas. Many times when you try things out, see what happens or just try to do the opposite of what is expected, you can create new ideas, routines and moves. Looking around and questioning everything will bring it's rewards.

Jon,
The Professor's Nightmare is the first trick I did for people and I still do it in most of my shows. I do a false count, then I tie them together and move the knot at the end of the routine. Could you give me a little info on whatelse the Freddy's Dead routine does and how can I get it? Thanks, Jerry

Hi Jerry,
Freddy's Dead is not the whole of the PN routine. It is actually the finale to my PN routine. Freddy's Dead allows you to hold the three equal length (ahem)ropes in your hands and have them change back to their orginal lengths without letting go of the ends. I took it further so that you can have someone else hold the ropes and they change lengths in their hands, wither as you pass your hands down them or while you are nowhere near them. Originally, the No Count False Count was something I showed in my lecture as a bonus for those who attended. My whole routine, including the NCFC and the 3 different endings are on my 'Spectators Don't Exist' video.
