Yep. A lady at the office was so floored by this that she smacked me. Good work again Jim. One of the other programmers was standing there watching, and he was pretty baffled too, I'd say.

Great idea! I haven't tried it yet, but I already see it's going to be excellent. It's different, and as Arby's says, "Different is Good!"

There is one way to hide the URL in the address bar...
First the creator of the trick needs to host this script on a web server that has a static IP in which they have control of the "Host Headers" for the websites. The web hosting needs to create a host header for "google.com" Then on your own computer, you need to search for a file called "HOSTS" using your Find File tool in Windows. Once the HOSTS file is open you need to add this entry... x.x.x.x google.com x.x.x.x is the IP address of the server on the net which has this script. The HOSTS file will override your IP's DNS server and connect you to the script when you type in "google.com" Then the script itself will connect to "www.google.com" which you don't have an entry for... (you wont have an entry for www in the HOSTS file) so it will connect you to the proper google site. So to prepare for the trick you will just type in google.com instead of http://www.google.com The inventor of the trick should contact me josh@web-operations.com and I"ll host it on the Web Operations web server and create this host header for you... PS. This can also be prepared on a victims computer within 30 seconds... so google will be faked on their computer as well... |

>> I'll host it
Very cool - I'll send you a copy later for hosting on your server Josh - my current host doesn't provide fixed IPs. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll see if I can produce a server-side filter that will remove some of the other "tells" from the page. I'm also planning on adding a feature that will enable operators of the trick to program it with custom redirects - good for practical jokes. - Jim |

If I won't host it permanantly I can at least show you what I'm talking about.
It will be absolutely impossible to tell that it isn't google.com. |

This was great, in IE at least, but I can't get it to work in Opera.
I am not sure why it doesn't, but I know whom to ask to find out! I'll let you know what they say. Very clever stuff. Thanks for the grin. Pix Smith Dallas, TX |

It is relying on some features which may not be implemented in Opera - specifically the Flash "FSCommand" which is a bit of a kludge, even in IE and Netscape.
There's a way I can work around this (by including images of the buttons directly in the Flash movie), but it means the buttons might not look exactly right, since button appearence differs from browser to browser. Did this make any sense at all? |

This is an excellent effect. I don't know when I'll get a chance to use it but when I do I belive the reactins will be great.

Thanks Jim that's a great effect, very creative. I did noticed two things that are inconsistant with Google. The "GOOGLE" banner is different. Also, when you first load up it doesn't default to the search text box (TAB-1 (?)).
BTW why did it get moved in this forum? and not Penny for your thoughts or Pick a Card any card? |

I originally posted a similar message in both forums, and I assume one of the moderators took umbrage and decided to pick one. The discussion is relevant to both forums, but sadly, the Café doesn't support cross-posts.
The default text-box issue is something I'm grappling with -it's exacerbated by my use of Flash - I haven't yet figured out how to fix it. The other problem I'm working on and will probably have a fix in a few days. Although there are indeed 2 or 3 inconsistancies, they are far less glaring than something like a thumb tip. It's all in the presentation: if the effect is performed naturally, the spectator will be none the wiser. |

You might want to make it your homepage. That way you won't be entering any extra text when going to the 'google' search engine. Instead, you just open a new browser window.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
This is really one of those tricks that you can do within seconds of learning it. I just had to force a card on my wife and daughter to a failed reveal. They know how much of my life revolves around google searches, so it was of no surprise that I turned to the computer to help me. Shock, awe, laughs and slaps! Superb thinking! HAHAHAHAHAHA! |

Just a note that the effect described in this thread is also available in a script called "Google Fool." I recently updated Google Fool to work with the latest version of Firefox.
This version of the effect, which uses a Firefox extension called "Greasemonkey," works directly with the google website, so that there isn't a revealing "tell" in the address bar. Greasemonkey is available here: http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/ Google Fool is available here: http://www.krazydad.com/greasemonkey/googlefool.user.js - Jim |
