I love the Ammar quote that Jonton pointed out, "Don't worry I won't look, I've seen this trick before!" It gets a solid laugh every time I use it. Possibly my favorite quote about magic is the one in my signature,

“Human kind cannot bear too much reality.” –T.S. Elliot

It basically sums up the answer to the question of why I perform magic.

I personally use that last one in my act quite often...
Enjoy!

I hope not. It's an embarassingly unfunny line. No offense !!!

It's just one of those lines that you use between tricks, and there may be an awkward silence due to bringing out props, cleaning up from a previous trick, etc. It's one of those really lame jokes that only laymen like.

It's like this: If a magician asked you "Hey, can you make my WIFE disappear???", you would probably smack him upside the head and question his magical maturity. However, if you were to beat a spectator to saying that by adding "And you, sir...I will now make your wife disappear!" into your act to create a very random (but necessary) offbeat moment, it would work wonders.

Don't be afraid to sometimes stoop to the lame jokes that spectators often throw at you. Just because we've heard them a million times (and have grown to hate them), doesn't mean the spectators wont enjoy it. It's okay to be human sometimes...
~Jonathan

Wow, you've got it all wrong man. The magicians seem to think that lay audiences like these kind of corny lines. They really don't. It is an insult to their intelligence and if you cracked lines like that in front of most people, they would think you were a horrible comedian and would be turned off. I've seen people get cursed at and the middle finger stuck up at them for lines like that.

I like this quote by Doug Henning -

Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we’re filled
with wonder for the world — it’s fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Middle finger and curses for the wife line, or the scorpion line?

My sig line contains a quote from the great Henry Hay.

What I love about it is he does not say "misdirection". He says "manipulation of interest". A big difference, and a good lesson.

There are four people who posted references to quotations in their signature lines. Of these, three no longer refer to any quote at all. It's interesting that people don't remember what they have posted when they change their signature lines.

It's also interesting that one person would really appear to be offended by a line slamming Osama bin Laden, or that anyone would be offended at his taking offense at it. If Silly Walter the Polar Bear is actually offended by this line, does it mean that he is fond of OBL or that he thinks that OBL's minions might be watching the Magic Café?

I don't think it will make much difference, because Silly Walter has fairly much concealed his identity. All we know about him is that he dislikes Brad Henderson.

Can we please stay out of current politics.

Side question, can I declare the voices in my head as dependents?

Perhaps it isn't Osama, but easy, cheap shots themselves.

Putting down Charles Manson takes very little skill, and only gets a thumbs up from idiots. Playing to the lowest common denominator isn't humor, it is just pandering.

Hey, everybody here hates taxes, right?

I would just think that bringing OBL into the minds of an audience trying to be entertained is just a bad idea in general

"just one of those lines that you use between tricks" I call that magicians Patter, which is a very poor substitute for real humor. Why do all bad magicians, and some good ones use the same magicians PATTER (jokes that are not funny).

Excerpt from the X-Files, “The Amazing Maleeni (2000/01/16):
SCULLY: Do you know magic, Mr. Pinchbeck? (Mr. Pinchbeck is played by Ricky Jay)
PINCHBECK: Yes, I do. Back in the '70s, my brother and I performed together.
MULDER: Why did you stop?
PINCHBECK: You never really stop.

“You never really stop.” – what a great piece of copy-writing.
"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.
