A while back, I heard rumor about the production by L&L Publishing of Easy to Master Mental Miracles featuring Richard Osterlind. I have to admit I was a bit dubious. With so much great work by such names as Banachek, Brown, Cassidy, Richardson, Becker, Earle, Knepper, Hilford, etc. was this simply the lazy person’s way to acquire some pieces of mentalism? Well, over the past few days I have taken quite a bit of time to study a preliminary copy of these DVDs and all I can say is WOW! When these come out BUY them! They are fantastic and in my opinion amongst the most important releases in mentalism. What Richard Osterlind and L&L Publishing have basically done is put together some of the classic pieces of mentalism from such luminaries as Corinda, Annemann, Koran, Hoy, Gann, etc. What is fascinating to me is that we are always looking for “what is new” when, in fact, some of the greatest mentalism and greatest magic is already out there but “buried” in various classic texts. Osterlind understands this. He also obviously understands mentalism to the nth degree and he brings some of these classic and forgotten mental miracles alive so that you can see exactly how strong they are if you have made the mistake of passing by them in various books, etc. In addition, Osterlind offers some invaluable ideas, handling and performing improvements, tips, etc. He has USED this material and thus he understands all of the nuances and imparts those. This is truly a collection of some of the best mentalism out there. There are no “add these numbers, multiply by the number of letters in a selected color and open to that page in a book, go to the 10th line… (OK you get the idea)”…. This is straightforward, extremely strong, very practical, and fairly easy to do mentalism – this is what mentalism would look like if you could truly do it. I believe these DVDs will be out by the beginning of next year – that is still a bit unknown. If you liked Osterlind’s other DVDs you will LOVE these. If you have considered studying mentalism you will find these invaluable. I know some of the experts in mentalism agree as these have already received raves from Barrie Richardson, Tim Conover, Richard Busch, Banachek, and others who have been fortunate enough to see preliminary footage. Barrie Richardson stated “I wish I would have had these videos by a master teacher 40 years ago when I first started in mentalism” and Tim Conover said, “A great collection of some of the finest mentalism ever invented performed by one of the genuine masters of our craft”. I hope these DVDs will inspire many to look into the classics and see how many wonderful secrets are hidden away. Once these do become available you will definitely want to get them, study them, and work on some of the classics taught. Just a fabulous project and highly recommended.

I believe it will be 4 volumes and I am not at liberty to discuss specific items included but MANY wonderful pieces that will excite even the seasoned mentalist. One other thing I forgot to point out is that Osterlind performs and teaches in "sets" which can easily be taken into the "real world" and you can have finished shows... all you need to apply is the showmanship, thought, and attention these deserve (and Osterlind discusses this as well and discusses how to be a better performer). There is one item alone that is worth many times the price of the whole set. Once I know a better release date I will try to get it to you but unfortunately at this point the actual date and the contents are kind of under wraps... I was so excited about what I saw I did get permission last week by L&L to mention them and give a general heads up.

Let me tell you, this is what mentalism is about. These DVD's teach, and not only that they show that the people who cry "outdated" could not be more more wrong. If you are looking for original tricks, don't buy them, but if you are looking for the real secrets of being a mentalist, pre-purchase these. Osterlind knows how to perform our craft, he knows the subtleties it takes to make an effect work, and more importantly he knows that usually it is the performer not the performance piece that makes an effect work or not and makes it entertaining. About time someone had the B A ** s to stand up and show how it should be done without shoving NEW useless tricks down our throat's. Well done Richard

Osterlind DVD's are definitly the best that I bought in 2004, I still enjoy all his routine and it is a great reference for lot of my routine even if I don't consider myself as a mentalist

Thank you, my good friend, for your continuing friendship and kindness.

Banachek and I have been confidants for a long, long time. The items in this upcoming collection of effects are those we have discussed and talked about over the years. I suppose many of the reasons I do what I do is because of such conversations that I have long forgotten.

Let me give those reading this a word of advice. If you want to advance and make a mark in our art, seek out friends like Banachek. Seek out, and hang around with, fellow performers who have a love for the art, are caring and giving and who sincerely want to see you learn and advance. Associate yourself with those who are honest, humble, generous and all the other wholesome qualities. They will rub off on you, along with their magical knowledge, and will help mould you into the person you should be.

To all of you who own Banachek's PSI Series, please go back and listen to the "Interviews". As good as the performing material is on PSI Series, that is where the real gold is. I am hoping that Easy To Master Mentalism will show that, coupled with the kind of advice Banachek gives, there are literally thousands of strong mentalism effects already out there that can make your reputation!

Thanks again, Banachek!

Talk about "class"! As Ross Perot might say: in the case of these two, "spell it with a capital 'C'!"
I have to think that it's a rare profession in which the top practitioners, the most renowned and respected experts in their chosen art, take the time to offer such sage advice to those who'd love to have a fraction of the success they've enjoyed and, for just the price of a few DVD's (which would probably be well worth their cost even if purchased solely for personal entertainment and not as professional educational resources) literally make their knowledge and real-life expertise accessible to others so that the art itself can progress.
Not to belabor the point but, reading Banachek's and Osterlind's words makes me even more proud to be connected, in however limited a way so far, with this art.

I hope they come out before christmas
Me as most of us have grown with the classic books (Annemann and Corinda) and watching an Artist like Rchard Osterlind performing routines from these would be just great.

...mmm, I wonder if I'll ever see a live performance by Osterlind, Banachek, Maven or Hilford. Living in country in South America makes it really difficult, and that's another reason why I like to invest on videos.

Appart from the great effects and advice I also love the entertainment value packed into the videos. You can't imagine for how long I watched the presentations In Mind Mysteries, Psi-Series and Videomind before moving to the explanations.

So, I cannot wait for these
Easy to master card Miracles with Ammar was great and I'm pretty sure that Easy to Master Mental Miracles by Osterlind will become an instant classic as well.

So let's see...
ETMM By Osterlind...
Psi-Series 2 by banachek...
Max Maven new videos
And Docc Hilford videos...

Gosh, I'll better get back to work

I actually still use Annemann and corinda, my entire fist mentalism material came from them.
I still use the material, I often wonder if people just pass this stuff by when they first scan the books as I never hear of any one mentioning putting them into practice.
I'll be very interested to see if the stuff I picked out of the books is performed on the DvD's

HW, you hit the magic nail on the head. There are treasures in those books and many other books, but most guys just buy the latest and greatest and wait until someone else has found those treasures.
Keep rereading the books and you'll be far ahead of the crowd.

Let me add a bit more about this series.

When I was approached with the idea of doing them, my reaction was "GREAT!" There are so wonderful great effects in the literature that people pass by and now I had the chance to demonstrate them. My approach was to not try to change much and to not try to inject too much of my own personality into them. I did add a few working points that I have learned over the years and it is impossible, of course, not to be yourself when performing. The main purpose was to show how direct and powerful these effects can be.

I really hope you like them!

I also perform material from Annemann and Corinda, and I don't consider it outdated at all!

In fact, I wanted to know which classics people performs and I decided posted this thread :

I wonder if any of those will be featured in ETMMM

Did I mention that ... I can't wait for those DVDs?

I am actually learning from Practical Mental Magic and 13 Steps now. Although I would love to own these DVD's I do have some misgivings about them being made available and enlightening those folks that are passing the books by.

One of the interesting things Richard points out throughout the series is how often times the "improvements" are often a step backwards from the original. Don't get me wrong, Richard is always examining his mentalism and magic and seeing if it can be made better but often times in trying to improve something, the beauty of the original is lost. Also, because we are thinking like magicians we sometimes work out new methods that lose the simplicity, straightforwardness, and genius of the earlier original methods. It IS wise and prudent to see if we can improve the classics but we have to take an HONEST look to see if our improvements really ARE improvements.

You will love this series... just great. I watched it again this weekend. Extremely strong.

Hi David. It's a good question but it truly pertains to all of magic - not just mentalism - it all takes dedication, a true look at oneself, practice, thought, ability to be open to criticism, study of performance, study of the background, appreciation for those who lay the groundwork, etc. What REALLY stands out after SEEING this set though is some incredibly important lessons which are 1) that often times we try to improve some of the classics but we have to be open and honest and truly see whether what we are doing is an improvement or a step back (often it is the later - and by this is does NOT mean we should not TRY to improve or excel) and 2) although we are often looking for the newest and greatest - in fact many many of the best routines and thinking are from years ago and buried in books, manuscripts or old videos. This will hopefully inspire many to putt some time and effort of our own to explore for these hidden treasures. Along the way in imparting this valuable information, Richard DEMONSTRATES this by SHOWING some of the mental masterpieces many many have overlooked. He also REALLY UNDERSTANDS mentalism and is thus a great teacher. So much of what I have been exposed to in mentalism (of course it is not my primary course of interest) is rather convoluted. Richard understands and imparts how important it is for direct in effect piece. He shows that although a method can be simplistic and uncluttered it can be extremely deceptive. He makes mentalism look like it would if you could really do it. And he does this with some pieces by Koran, Hoy, Annemann, etc. that are often overlooked. Maybe the "Easy to Master" brand will bother some but it should NOT cloud the importance of this series... it DOES make learning GOOD mentalism EASIER because of the lessons taught, the clear effects taught, and the teaching style put forth. I can assure you that it does not at all ***ize mentalism, but in my case, as an example provides a newfound respect for mentalism. While I understand and appreciate your concern I hope you or others will not overlook this series because of the title line. Richard and L&L have done a true service to mentalism with this series. It provides lessons, thinking, and effects we should all aspire to. It does make learning mentalism "easier" and better.

By coincidence, since I didn't read the above when it was originally posted on Sept. 12, this past week I was thinking about how great it would be for some of the pros to put out DVD's of them performing some of the many great effects which up until now have been talked and written about but hardly ever seen in action.
I hope Mr. Osterlind's new DVd series in this vein is the beginning of a trend. It kind of reminds me of how every few years the new generation of the day "rediscovers" the great musical legends like Sinatra etc.

Somthing I found from Corinda is that though a lot of people will often cry outdated due to the patter I often thing that it is the period patter that makes the setting, the storys added to the effects in Corinda are Wonderful I think, even just reading them transports me back to the times of these pieces, suc as a spookey early 20th centuary drawing room at the start of the seance.
Some of the storys are 90 percent patter which enthralls the audience and the effect or revelation at the end is what shocks.
I am very eger to see what spin Mr Osterlind puts on these time honered pieces, and will they be available before christmas is te burning question,if they are I'll save them for christmas day
