But it gets a tad condescending when some folks feel that others must abide by their ethical standards. Thriving marketplaces like e-bay and the "let's make a magical deal" forum here show us something. It's pretty obvious that many many people don't feel the need to treat the sale of magical apparatus any differently than they would any other non magical item. If some out there want to feel superior ethically because they won't sell or buy used items, that's fine. But perhaps they could practice their ethics without disparaging others who see nothing wrong with the sale of used items. Speaking of which. Just got a great deal on a used tape from a fellow magician here just today. And.... Also bought a brand spankin' new copy of Phil goldsteins "focus".

Interesting debate...but I suspect it's just a completely unrealistic expectation.

It seems to me that people shouldn't feel "ashamed" for buying used books. Its just like buying anything else second hand. I think its a little bit unfair to imply that one is stealing proffits from the author just because they are buying something used. Sometimes if you can't get something second hand you can't get it at all, right?
Tricks and videos are another matter though, since they can easily be duplicated. While I don't think it is unethical to buy used books, or even used dvds, I think that videos and tricks fall under a slightly different catagory, because the person selling them to you may very well have a duplicate that they copied themselves stashed away at home. |
