I've been looking into this product myself as well. I just received an email from Mark Stevens indicating that they are working on a video clip of this product. However, he also indicated that there is a video available that explains the detailed workings of the portable asrah. The video also has performance tips and suggestions along with it. The video sells for $25 and, if you choose to purchase the portable asrah, Stevens Magic will credit the $25 towards your purchase price.
Mark Stevens highly recommends that anyone interested in this product purchase the video first. That's exactly what I am going to do!!

I don't think the sales dialogue is entirely correct.
It stated that the magicians hands were free. One hand would have to not be free. I am suspicious of this. Please keep us informed. Asrah is my favorite illusion and I would jump on this portable one if it is all they say it is.

Hey Guys, there is an "attachment" that allows you to have both hands free.

I'm not out to knock this product in specific because I don't know everything there is to know about it. What I do know is that I once worked with a "portable" Asrah using the method associated with the illusion. And I also worked backstage with a show that used one. Both in my first-hand experiences, and from a backstage point of view, I found the illusion to be a disappointment.
I now own a very nice, custom built, full stage Asrah that is never a disappointment. Of course, considering the method and everything involved, it isn't for everyone. But if the mid-air vanish is what you're looking for, it's the only way to go. |

Can you be more specific what you mean by a disappointment? Can you in fact have both hands free? PM me if you prefer. Thanks so much.

I would love to incorporate this with my existing levitation of my assistant but going from venue to venue I never thought an Asrah was feasable.
I'm intrigued, but like the rest of you, I'm cautious. Once someone has reviewed the video please post back your findings. -JH
Did you see that?

It sounds like one of those tricks that is just a bit too good to be true. Anybody else have any experience?

We have owned the Lipan version from Steven's for several years now. It does take practice. It can be done hands free. With some good choreography it can be a beautiful thing. We just sold our asrah table and flyig rig, thus we no longer have use for the hand held. If some is interested in it, please PM me.

I own the Julio Lipan portable Asrah and I think it is practical. It needs some modification to do it hands free, otherwise it hurts. The portable Asrah itself is quite good (although it´s not the real thing), maybe good for part-time illusionists who don´t want to spend their money on truck rentals.
The Lipan video is less than poor. |

Can someone please PM with the overall workings of the effect because I'm confused, I know how the big flashy stage version works, but I have know clue how the portable can work I am not trying to copy the effect just understand it more before is spend hundreds of dollars on something. Habilo what do you mean when you say it hurts?

There are advantages and disadvantages to the Lipan asrah. The biggest advantage to it is that it permits a magician to perform it in areas that don't have full stage rigging. This is also one of the biggest disadvantages.
By removing the limitations of stage access, it can create the false impression in an inexperienced performer that the illusion is suitable for performance in areas where the audience is really too close for actual performance. This can lead to inadvertent exposure of the illusion.

I own the Lipan Portable Asrah and I use it together with my gamolo levitation. I levitate my assistant the usual way. When she awakes, I bring her in a standing position in front of my table/bed facing the audience. I then proceed with the Lipan Asrah with my assistant hiding under the clothed table.
I guess the only drawback with this illusion is that the figure stands only about five feet tall. So you must use a short assistant for this.
