Hi Derren

In your book ‘Pure Effect’, you discuss how important you feel it is for an audience to actually be able to see the act of mind reading taking place.

Your own take on this is wonderfully plain to see in your performances. The way you look at, touch and physically manipulate a participant makes it clear to the audience that you are actually in the process of plucking a thought from a mind.

However, despite your passionate espousal of this very visual mentalism, I am always amazed by the number of working pros, performing on both dvd and live on stage, who just stare into space, scratch their chin, umm and ahh a bit and then reveal their participant’s thought.

I wonder, does this rather nonchalent performance style irritate or disappoint you and do you wish that more performers would work harder at thinking about how the mind reading process should actually look?
