I viewed another of my new Ellis & Webster DVDs last night. This one was the least expensive of the set.
Tim explains his FISM winning "Runaround Sue" cups & balls routine. The first thing I must say is that this is a real showpiece. Even on Video (which is far from an ideal venue for Cups & Balls), this routine is highly entertaining and impressive. I can only imagine the appeal to a live audience. This is a very impressive piece of work. This routine is not the kind that you buy as a packet trick at the magic store, and impress your friends with the next day. The routine is a full on theatrical production featuring a cups & Balls in a 50s theme to music. Even if you don't plan on doing this type of routine, there is much to be learned from Tim in this DVD. The thinking, the use of a theme music, using theatrical elements to solve technical problems. The one mistake that was made on this DVD is that the explanation section played before the performance. Believe me. You don't want to ruin this routine by knowing how it is done before enjoying it performed first. This DVD will leave lasting impressions, Highly recommended Mike

Sorry about that. It seems that if you press PLAY in the PLAY menu of the DVD it goes straight into the explanation and skips the performance (weird DVD routing...) but you can choose PERFORMANCE in the PLAY menu and the explanation will follow on straight from that point. The DVD also contains four other versions of the Runaround Sue act so that you can see the "evolution" of the routine too.

A while back I saw a video clip of Tim's Runaround Sue act somewhere on the Internet. It is a great routine. I'm ordering this today.

Is this available at any U.S. dealers yet? I called a couple today to order this DVD and none had it in stock yet.

I believe it has JUST been replicated and Murphys Magic Supplies should be sending copies out to dealers who ordered it this week (or next week at the latest).
Get your local dealer to order it direct from Murphys. (I know Hank Lees and Hocus Pocus are taking orders right now).

Several years ago I saw Tim Ellis perform 'Runaround Sue' as part of the close-up show at the Australian national convention.
In all honesty, before having seen Tim's routine, I had only read about his performances of the routine, and had mistakenly concluded that his routine was simply a 'nothing extraordinary' cups and balls routine performed to a well known song. I was wrong - and wrong in a major way. This is a great routine feauturing solid magic and elegant construction.

I have seen Tim do this routine in person. It is AWESOME!! He performed it during a lecture for our magic club. He and his wife are very thoughfull entertainers, with nothing in a performance left to chance.
I will be getting this dvd and probebly some of their others as well.

I highly reccomend that you pick up this limited release. This routine is one of the top 3 cups and balls I have ever seen. But it is wasy more than a cups and balls routine...there is an amusing plot, actions that suit that plot, a double kicker. I cannot stress how much potential I see in this plot. I am a bartending magician during the summers and the thought of the tips a routine like this could bring in for Car Show week and Americade Bike week brings tears to my eyes.
That being said.. as much as I like this routine it is not going to work for everyone. There are some difficult moves, staging, costume, and other technical issues that must be addressed. If you are familiar with vanishes at all, I should tell you he is doing vanishes where he shows both hands empty. You might think it went up his sleeve but his sleeves are rolled up. Where O Where can the little ball be O Where O where can it be Things are constantly the last place you would expect them. Just the basic routine is pretty technical. You will need to aquire some common items and a few common magic props. Then you have to put some work in these items to form the props. The ball vanishes are technical and/or difficult, but he wraps the technics with parts of the plot. There are some real eureka moments in thinking in this routine. Even if you can't do the routine Tim is sharing some truly professional touches throughout the DVD. All in all I would classify this routine as a professional manipulation style 2 cup routine wrapped around a theme and costume that match a period specific song with a "final" load that fits the theme and a kicker that truly fits the whole routine. I do wonder how one can go from this routine into other tricks when dressed like that (I imaginge that this routine would be a closer or encore anyway) On a scale of 1 to 10, I score this an 9. That's half a point for the difficulty of obtaining the props and another half for technical issues. Joe |

I'm still waiting for my copy. I ordered it from Hank Lee's on the 22th of October and they charged it to my credit card on the 25th of October! I called yesterday and was told it still hasn't come in yet. I guess I should have ordered it from someone else.

I got my DVD the other day. Brilliant routine.
I had a similar problem when I pressed "play" as mentioned by someone earlier. It went straight to the Intro logo followed by a graphic sign saying explanation...then the screen went blank. I found the only way to really play this was to click on the performance and continue to watch from that point on. I enjoyed the evolution of the trick showing various performances as the trick improved. This helped illustrate the thinking and work involved by Tim in putting this routine together. This alone was a worthwhile lesson to learn. |

Wow! My copy of this DVD arrived yesterday, the 29th of November. I ordered it from Hank Lee's on the 22nd of October. I'm not thrilled with the service from Hank Lee's and didn't like waiting over a month. But, after watching "Runaround Sue" I have to say it was well worth the wait. This maybe the best DVD I've seen to date.
I have wanted to put together a solid cup and ball routine and have collected much material on the cups and balls over the past six months (I figure the more research I do the better a routine I can put together). After watching this DVD I can say this is the most inovative routine I've come across, both in presentation and methodology. Tim is a very clever and sneaky guy. Will I do his routine? No. Will I adopt much of his methodology used in his routine? No. And probably most people won't. What I really got from this tape is the concept of thinking outside of the box regarding the moves and sleights involved in the cups and balls. Tim's routine uses some real off-beat moves/sleights to make the magic happen. By off-beat I mean moves/sleights that I haven't seen used in the cups and balls...and wouldn't have thought of using. I can't imagine anyone buying this DVD and being dissapointed with their purchase. If you're out there Tim, thank you for sharing. Your DVD definitely inspired me and got the creative juices flowing in new directions. I'm sure my cup and ball routine in progress will benefit from this DVD. |

If you think that routine is good, check out his D'cups and D'balls routine lol one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Mitch, thank you for the compliments. I'm glad you found Runaround Sue inspiring. Sue-Anne and I are also working on a lot of new routines and it can be very frustrating trying to get them past the "pedestrian" and into the original. My only advice is persistence. For every twenty or thirty ideas we come up with, only one will get fully developed. But even then, the rejected ideas get played with for a long time too before they get pushed into the "for another time" drawer.
Michael. I'm glad you like the D'Cups too. We didn't think it came out nearly as well on DVD as it has live. It got such a great reaction when we debuted it at the Milwaukee SAM convention that it's set us an impossible standard to live up to. But your feedback has encouraged us tremendously! We do love creating custom routines for specific audiences (which we do in the corporate arena) and an audience comprised solely of magicians opens up a huge avenue of in-jokes. If these DVDs sell well, and we hope the word spreads and they do, then we have a heap of 'in joke' routines we'll put as bonuses on our DVD #4.
