I just want to know if you can use too much fanning powder? or does all the excess come off after a few ripples?
I only ask because my cards felt perfectly straight after but after about 5 or 6 fans they started to feel slightly tacky. Just for infomation, I used a deck of bikes, norm nielsens fanning powder and I used the bag method as described by jeff McBride in one of his DVD's (can't remember which volume it was) Any help would be great. What I do is take just a little bit of fanning powder and place it into a clear plastic bag. I then drop my cards into the bag and firmly tighten and tie off the end. I give the cards in the bag a few good shakes and this evenly coats every single card all at once woithout the oil from my hands geting involved.
It is a fast and easy process for putting the powder on the cards. Then just riffle them a few times to get off any excess and you should be in good shape. Kyle

I don't think you can use too much. It will just fall off over time. Fanning Powder does make your cards feel "soapy" or "waxy" or (insert the name of your favorite Disney dwarf here). If that's the tackiness you are feeling, then it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

I note you are in England. I have never had the pleasure to visit your country, but I hear it is very humid climate. Weather affects the playing cards and powder.
I found that in our high humidity time of year, less or no powder works with Nielsen Manipulation Cards. Then again, you may want to try the Japanese method and apply and rub in wax and polish. I have found different parts of the USA affect the cards differently. You must just experiment and find what works for your part of the world and your regional area and time of year. In winter I have to keep the cards in my pocket to keep the cards warm. Hope this helps and will get you thinking and experimenting. |

I live in the desert; so humidity is almost never a problem (well there are 2 days in August when it rains, sometimes).
Given that, when I started using fanning powder years and years ago, there was one time when I used too much powder. My deck was so gummy, I ended up throwing it away. I couldn't work it out. My first clue was when I discovered my deck was about 2 inches (5cm +/-) thick from the powder. I can only imagine that the situation would be worse in an area with high humidity. Steven

Obviously, you don't want to cake on the powder. After you apply the powder, give the cards a vigorous shuffle and off you go!

Someone sold an applictor, called "SOOZEE" you slid each card through it and it put just the right amount of zinc stearate on both sides of the cards.

The Great Marconic from Holland wrote in one of his books to take a couple of cotton wool pieces and sprinkel/cover them in fanningpowder. Place the pices in an empty shoebox together with the cards, put the lid on (you might want to use some tape around the lid to keep it in place) and shake it vigorously. This is a great method for distributing the powder evenly. I think it gets a better result then the plastic bag version as the cotton wool seams to suck all of the exess powder to them so you don't need to get it in you lungs when you open the box. Ok you still will have to riffle the deck a couple of times to be sure to get rid of all the extra powder but you don't get to much excess.

Zinc Stearate in a paper bag works great--taught by Neil Foster.

One has to remove a bit of it afterwards by swapping each and every single card with a soft cloth (f.ex.) Riffling the deck is not enough..but if you're satisfied with your method, that's OK, it might actually be OK for stagework.. I powder my crds for close-up work and there I HAVE to remove excessive applied powder, so maybe you are correct.. This brings to mind a funny incident appearing in a magic magasin in the late 1950s/early 1960s, where a very young Alex Elmsley actually did a stage-act also containing cardmanipoulations.. Apart from other things they mentioned, they also mentioned, that here was a performer who had powdered his deck too much..there was dust of the pwoder allover the stage when he riffled his cards..apart from this, they praised his performance, and THAT I understood well, eben on stage he was outstanding!..
