There is a lot of pen thru something going on in the magic era.... are they all working on the same principle? or all of them are different? if they are the same, can the pen penetrate all other things like hands, tongue etc?

To answer the question from Perl-the pen can't penetrate anything thick like a hand or tongue but can go through (almost) anything that's thin.

I have the Exective Pen and, so far, I've mostly gotten great results with it. However, I must say that, by far and without exception, I get the best results doing the trick for children. I am a second-grade teacher, and my students absolutely love this trick! Magic in general is a great way to get children's attention and get them ready for learning in the classroom too. This particular trick is also one of the main reasons why my students believe I am REALLY magic. Because of this trick, they now think I can even stop the rain for recess. The great news is that, so far, luck has even allowed me to do that. Yes, my students can never get enough of this trick, they repeatedly ask me to do it, they repeatedly try to do it themselves (unsuccessfully, of course) and not once has any of them figured it out. So, I guess the value of any trick is in the effect it has on any particular audience, for any particular performer. I can see how it might not work for everyone and all audiences, but it sure does work for me. I've already gotten well beyond my $15.00 worth of value out of it.

While out searching for some stocking stuffers yesterday I happened across a copy of Karl Fulves's Self Working Coin Magic (now there's a misnomer for you!) as published by Dover. In amongst some fodder and silly stunts are hidden some very powerful effects. None are fully fleshed out, but with a bit of imagination there are some potential killers in there. Among them is a version of pen through bill that sounds remarkably similar to the one mentioned by Vinny earlier in this thread. A nice effect, and one I'd already decided to try out before reading through this topic. Glad to stumble across an endorsement. God, I love sychronicity!
BTW, the book sells for a lousy $6.95 at Barnes and Noble! A bargain at twice the price... Anthony |

Yeah I too recently re-read this book and its got a lot of gems stuffed in there between silly stuff, and as you said needs a bit of fleshing out, which is fun.

Regarding the "pen just screams GIMMICK" comment at the beginning. I used to feel that the heat naturally fell onto the pen, and that the penetration just looked fake.
Then I saw Dean Dill's presentation of this effect. He didn't change the method... just the moment. His handling placed ALL the heat on the bill (so much so that I missed the pen switch, and I KNEW what to look for! ;-) Just goes to show you that a great presentation can make every trick better. |

I use the line that I'm going to cause them to hallucinate and see something that really isn't there...do fast penetration (I use Executive pen and do hand it out) and since getting the "Center Tear" download from the Trickery have a great finish which when gone into immediately gives a nice impromptu presentation. ('Center Tear' is where you rip out the center (George) portrait...and do an instant restoration...clean hands and borrowed bill which is returned. Nice combo.

In the 16 years that I've been performing Misled only ONE person thought the pencil had magnets in it. This happened just a few months ago and I was finally able to implement an idea I came up with years earlier should someone claim the pencil was gimmicked; I broke the pencil into several pieces and gave it to the inquiring spec as I then struck a “wrestling type” pose of strength and macho-ness which got some smiles. Almost every time I’ve used a pen (any of them really) at least one person thought it was magnets even if they couldn't find them, one specs exact words were "He's locked it so it won't come apart". I mainly perform in bars and what I've always loved about Misled is that I can borrow a bill and then ask them to wait a moment while I borrow something from the bar, then walk over to the bar and ask the bartender how the night is going or whatever and come back with my pencil that is so innocent that it needn't be cross-examined 'til your cross-eyed! I've heard excessive amounts of laymen over the years say "the pen has magnets" for me to use one. Besides, I like the second phase of Misled and the fact that both the bill and pencil are ungimmicked and can used as promotional items if one so desired. I think it's the audiences perception that pens are considered high tech in comparison with the very low tech wooden pencil, making it plausible in the specs mind that a pen could be gimmicked whereas a pencil flies in under radar every time as it is above suspicion from the get go. If you’re going to push something through a bill Timothy Wenk’s Misled is the way to go. |

If a spectator suspects magnets, or if you need to add to the pen using the Krentz method, I just feel that you're not performing it properly. I've never had a problem with the effect. A fellow magician just had to show me his handling, once, and I had it down - works perfectly.
Sometimes, getting finger-flingy will ruin an effect. Subtlety, in handling, is very effective in this type of routine. |

If people are focusing on the PEN you are doing something wrong. Any one can take a pen and thrust it through a bill. ANYONE! Anyone can tear the pen out the side of the bill.
Has any magic happened yet? NO! Many magicians think that this is where the magic is, because this is where the cool gimmick is being utilized. The magic is in the restoration. I will say it again. The magic is in the restoration. So place your focus there and they, too, will focus their attention there. This routine is a gem so please enjoy it and have fun! Corey |

I am so glad to hear that so many magicians hate the pen thru bill effect. It is and has always been a reputation maker for me and I have never received anything other than dropped jaw amazement. Maybe its my handling where I forcefully slam the pen through the bill. In any case, you guys are right. Put the pen through bill effects away in a drawer and forget about them. I will suffer the road alone.

I have and still prefer the John Cornelius original pen thru anything, as it can give the illusion that your sliding the pen back and forth deeper in the hole because of the way the pen is built.

Corey whenever you come to the city, I'll have a Bic Wonder for you my friend. |

"Dan Harlan’s Ultimate Impromptu Magic" shows a method without a gimmicked pen in one of his volumes.

That may be "Now U Z It" from Harlan. Apparently it was on his Ultimate Impromptu Magic Vol II, but it's also on the DVD collection called The Secrets of Money Magic: World's Greatest Magic by the World's Greatest Magicians. No gimmicked pen/pencil or bill. Both can be borrowed and inspected before and after.

I personally love this effect. I use the stealth pen, and I think it's a pretty and visual penetration. I love to watch people try to pull off the tip of the pen, only to find it's quite ordinary (or so they think, he he).
Here's my take on the pen thru bill. I borrow a bill (can be signed if you want)and start with the finger thru bill bit, and I explain that because of the bill's composition, you can can slide your finger out the side causing the fibers to move around my finger, leaving the bill in tact. I then repeat the effect with a pen, showing them that as long as the pen is slid, the bill will "heal itself". I then warn them never to pull the pen straight out, and I do so, leaving a nice little hole in the bill. A hole puncher and a bill switch get this done nicely, as does a magnet in the back pocket for clean up.
To defy the laws of tradition is a crusade only of the brave.
